12 Designers to Watch for on the Birmingham Fashion Week Runway

Friday Night Up & Coming Designer
We’ve been following Birmingham’s own Bradford Billingsley since his smashing red lace dress first hit the runway at Birmingham Fashion Week as a Rising Design in 2013. Now a rising Vestavia Hills High School sophomore, he has designed for Miss Teen Alabama, won top honors on the Lifetime TV competition Project Runway: Threads, and received a high-energy standing ovation at the conclusion of his runway show at last year’s BFW (see photo).

2. Abbey Glass

Thursday Night Headlining Designer
Abbey Glass is known for mixing creative textiles with clean lines, and a modern, feminine fit.  The Atlanta native—who has worked under Marc Jacobs and Francisco Costa at Calvin Klein Collection—offers a fresh spin on classic, tailored clothing for women. She was recently featured in Southern Living’s 50th Anniversary Issue. Her latest collection will be at Gus Mayer Aug. 25-27.

3. Rising Design Star Winner Lauryn Tankersley

2015 Rising Design Star Challenge Winner Lauryn Tankersley, a junior at Fairview High School in Cullman, will take the runway again this year to show off her designs. On Thursday and Friday nights, 60 finalists from this year’s competition show off their “fashion of the future” designs that are glued, stapled, or taped together and made out of nontraditional items. Thirty finalists will return to the runway Saturday night, when a winner will be chosen.

4. Alice & Trixie

Saturday Night Opener
Alice & Trixie is a celebration of Angela Taylor George’s obsession with exploring vintage stores and global marketplaces, her appreciation for style icons of the past, and her passion for art. The collection of 100 percent silk pieces is marked by bohemian glamour in unique vibrant prints and rich solid hues. Locally her designs are available at The Clothes Tree and Elle.

Saturday Night Headlining Designer
Based in Alabama, heidi elnora helps brides-to-be find or design their dream dress while staying true to their Southern roots. Her reality show, Bride by Design, airs as a part of TLC‘s lineup, and  her first flagship bridal boutique, the heidi elnora Atelier, is located on historic Morris Avenue in downtown Birmingham.

Sophia Vergara, Salma Hayek, Heidi Klum, and Halle Berry have all donned Hale Bob’s flirtatious and feminine styles. The line is known for its prints, bright colors, rich silks, and luscious velvets for fashionable, confident women who want to stand apart and feel feminine and sexy.

7. Emerging Designer Winner Shan Latris

2015 Emerging Designer Competition Shan Latris Latris will reveal a new set of sassy style and hip, southern charm in her latest collection. Sixteen Emerging Designers from this year’s competition will showcase their creations Thursday and Friday nights, with eight finalists returning Saturday night. The competition promotes local talents from upcoming college juniors, seniors, or post-graduate fashion designers.

Thursday Night Featured Designer
by SMITH is recognizable for hand-painted prints, vibrant colors, and bold geometric patterns that place a spin on classic looks. A graduate of The University of Alabama’s Apparel Design program, designer Smith Sinrod developed her love for Thailand’s rich silks during a trip to the region, and has since incorporated them into all her collections. Inspired by her great grandmother and drawn to bold outfits and bright colors as a child, she designs pieces with a bit of whimsical and vintage glamour. Friday Night Opening Designer
With a sophisticated yet cutting-edge aesthetic, Benjamin Jay delivers a fresh take on essentials reinvented with shredded details, treatments, and cuts. The line’s attention to detail has achieved a laidback, cool look perfect for dominating the city streets of downtown. It is available locally at Gus Mayer and will be featured in a trunk show Aug. 26-27.

Friday Night Headlining Designer
Rails blends the casual comfort of southern California living with a sleek sophistication. Relaxed but always refined, the collection draws on influences from international travel to metropolitan living. Founded in 2008 by Los Angeles native, Jeff Abrams, Rails has grown from a small label, starting with just a single hat, into a full collection of women’s, men’s and children’s apparel. The latest collection will be at Gus Mayer Aug. 30-31.

You’ll see styles from Birmingham boutiques walk the runway each night of Fashion Week. Pretty Wolf takes the runway Thursday, Alchemy 213 and Gus Mayer on Friday, and Fab’rik (pictured from BFW 2015) and The Clothes Tree on Saturday.

Thursday Night Featured Designer
It all started when Denise Roxenstone saw the coolest image of young Keith Richards. Everything he wore clashed so incredibly. When her band went their separate ways, Denise Knew Fashion was her next calling—a chance to transfer her rock vision into clothing through Roxenstone.
