Top Family Lawyer: Jessica Kirk Drennan

Biography

Jessica Kirk Drennan, family and matrimonial attorney since 1996 and founder of Kirk Drennan, P.C., attributes her great success to diligent preparation, creative solutions and passionate advocacy.

Family law has been her focus virtually from the beginning of her legal career. “It grabbed a hold of me. I loved solving the problems and helping people . . .the everyday problems as well as the legal issues. I loved talking people through to solutions. I thought it was fascinating because what people don’t realize about divorce is that you get to do everything….there are real property issues, division of business interests, interpretation of contracts and trusts, tax issues as well as the family law issues wrapped up in these cases. The more complex the case is the more areas of law it touches and it keeps you challenged. To this day, 26 years in, I still am challenged by some aspect of almost every case I get. It might be the psychological aspect of it or it could be the legal aspect. It has always been about 90 percent of what I do and since 2006 it’s been 100 percent.”

Jessica leads the Family Law Practice Group at her firm which focuses on matrimonial and family law at the trial and appellate levels, and on the preparation of prenuptial and post-nuptial agreements. With considerable experience in complex litigation, the Kirk Drennan Family Law Practice Group handles cases involving high asset marital estates, alimony and custody in controversy. The firm employs five lawyers and five staff members all of whom are dedicated to providing the highest level of service to the firm’s clients.

Jessica Kirk Drennan is AV rated by Martindale Hubbell, a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, a Board Certified Advocate of the National Board of Trial Advocacy and was recently inducted to The Birmingham Bar Foundation Society of Fellows and was member of Leadership Birmingham, Class of 2019.

Jessica is as dedicated to her community as she is to family and matrimonial law. In 2015 Jessica won the AG Gaston Award issued by the Birmingham Business Alliance.  She has served in various leadership roles including Chair of Birmingham Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Program, President of the Women’s Network, and Chair of the Family Law Section of the Alabama Bar Association.

Q & A

When did you start your own firm?

“I opened my own practice, Kirk Drennan Law, in February 2011. I am passionate about what I do. I still work 10 to 12 hours a day, often six days a week. My husband keeps saying you’ve been doing this 26 years when are you going to get tired of it. But it is really the clients that keep me going. I am so client centric. Every single one of them I want to help.”

What attracted you to the law?

“I liked the analytical and  verbal aspects, the debate. I have always enjoyed that. I don’t consider confrontation to be confrontation; I consider it to be discussion. It’s a lost art. And it is civil not uncivil. Also, I just always loved the idea of justice and I have always been for the little guy. That’s what attracted me to the law.”
