Ah, the day you either dread or celebrate: Valentine’s Day. We often find ourselves involved in a love/hate relationship with Valentine’s Day. Whether you are a hopeless or realistic romantic, the day celebrates cherishing those you love regardless of the shining prospects in your life.

In the meantime, people get so anxious about making the wrong move that they end up waiting until it’s too late to do anything personal and appropriate. Thanks to Birmingham’s local gems, you don’t have stress because of the Valentine’s disasters of the past.

You can always make reservations at any of our fabulous restaurants. Some good ideas are Chez Fon Fon, Bottega, Hot & Hot Fish Club, or Little Savannah—the list could go on and on. But no matter if you go to great lengths or only put forth a little effort, I’ve shared some ways to add some sugar and spice to the day of love.

Add some drama. The more I travel, the more I realize how lucky we are in regards to the arts community in Birmingham. Valentine’s Day is a great excuse to seek out these the local gems that are sure to please even the toughest arts critic. You can choose an operatic experience presented by the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, a stroll through exhibits at the Birmingham Museum of Art, or even a local band’s showcase at Bottletree Cafe.

Dust off those dancing shoes. It doesn’t matter if your go-to move is the plié or the moonwalk; just don’t be afraid to show them off! It’s good for the heart and soul if you just let loose of the expectations that people set for this day. Whether it’s a night of salsa at Fred Astaire Dance Studios or swing presented by Birmingham Swing Dancers, you can rest assured that you and your date will have a good time.

Show a little skin. If you want to do something on the more adventurous side of romance, try a boudoir photo shoot for your loved one. It’s sure to spice things up! Local photographers like Arden Photography know exactly how to make your vision come to life.

Get your hands dirty. If your typical date night consists of dinner at a restaurant, then change it up. Sign up for a cooking class at the Summit’s Sur La Table, and impress your date with what you just learned from the latest episode of Master Chef.

Take a sip and relax. Thankfully Valentine’s Day is on a Friday this year and a little drive to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city isn’t out of the question. Instead of wishing you could fly to Napa Valley for a wine tour or tasting, try something a little closer to home, like a trip to Ozan Vineyard and Cellars in Calera. There’s nothing that a bottle of wine and Southern hospitality can’t fix.
