The Silvertron Café has been a popular neighborhood restaurant for more than 25 years. In November 2007, Marco Morosini and his wife Elan reopened the restaurant, preserving the past’s popular dishes while bringing new life to The Silvertron Café with Marco’s Italian influence.

The Place

Located at 3813 Clairmont Avenue, in the Forest  Park neighborhood of Birmingham, The Silvertron Café is an historic restaurant with a  bright future. The Morosinis invite you to continue to love your familiar favorites while trying some exciting new dishes, wines and cocktails. The Silverton Café serves lunch and dinner on weekdays. On Saturdays they are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And on Sundays they serve brunch, lunch and dinner. The crisp black-and- white ambiance has been brightened with fresh, locally grown flowers and touches of cobalt blue. Ceiling fans hang from the high, ornate tin ceiling.
Black leather booths line the perimeter, and diner-style tables with vintage wooden chairs are filled with couples, families and friends who are gathered tonight for dinner.

The People

Marco Morosini grew up in Bergamo, Italy.  He discovered at an early age that the restaurant business was his true calling. Morosini began working in area restaurants at the age of 17. His background also includes stints as a chef or general manager in Paris, San Francisco and Panama City. He had plans to accept a position in Sydney, Australia, when he met his wife,

Elan, a Birmingham native. Morosini worked at several Birmingham restaurants before the couple bought  The Silvertron Café in 2007. Since that time, some favorite authentic Italian dishes and other new dishes have been added to the menu, as well as Morosini’s ever-changing soup of the day.

Favorite Fare

Tonight we dine on a Monday evening for pasta night. Dinner begins with cocktails—Koala Tini and Strawberry-Blueberry Tini. The Koala Tini is golden in color and foamy on top. It is an awesome elixir with rich, complex flavors of butterscotch and vanilla, while maintaining balance rather than sweetness. The Strawberry-Blueberry Tini is light in body and neither tart nor sweet, with the fresh fruit flavors shining through. We select this week’s flavored hummus—Black Bean Hummus and Cheese & Herb Stuffed Fried Artichoke Hearts. The hummus arrives centered on a platter surrounded by fresh tomatoes, celery, carrots, red peppers and chips. I love having the healthy options of the veggies for dipping. They are fresh and crisp and pair well with the smooth, cool hummus and its integrated black bean flavor. And the fried artichokes are golden brown on the outside with hot Mozzarella and Parmesan melted into each artichoke. A side of lovely marinara adds a hint of spice and tomato flavor to this divine dish, of which I will be back for more. And the favorite entrée is the Lasagna of the Day, Marco’s handmade pasta.

This comforting dish comes with a side salad and arrives in a hearty portion, piping hot with layers of handmade pasta, ground mild and sweet Italian sausage, green peppers and onions with the perfect ratio of sauce. Morosini’s heritage and expertise are showcased in every bite of this tasty and fulfilling handmade lasagna. And for dessert we share the White Chocolate Bread Pudding. This atypical bread pudding is delightfully light. It is golden in color with whipped cream atop, drizzled with raspberry sauce and sprinkled with powdered sugar.
