Dive In: Hot Diggity Dogs

Written and Photographed by Beau Gustafson

was eating a Winky Dink dog at Hot Diggity Dogs with some of the best pimento cheese I have had in town, talking to a priest eating an El Diablo dog. She said that she came here often and even had her own special dog that Tom Bagby, the owner, made for her so frequently it should be named after her. That tells you a lot about this joint.

I asked Bagby about his place and he said, “It’s hard to be pretentious about a hot dog, but I am always thinking of new creations.” He said that when Paget Pizitz came to him with the idea for a hot dog shop—which is located above Fancy’s on Fifth and doubles as the “secret entrance” to The Marble Ring speakeasy in Avondale—he started experimenting with recipes. They make their own seaweed relish, pickled onions, kraut and slaw, and now they have a lineup of scrumptious dogs (your choice of 100 percent kosher beef or tofu dogs) and a roomful of happy folks eating and tapping their feet to rock and roll late into the night.
