Jen West

She blogged her way thin!

By Angela Karen

Name: Jen West
Age: 31
My hometown: Morris, Alabama
My passion: Running, triathlon, my blog (TheJenWestQuest.com), and the book I’m currently writing.
I am guilty of: Having too many passions.
My best friend says I am: A go-getter!
What is your greatest extravagance: A good body massage.
What is your greatest indulgence: Gourmet cheesecake, frozen yogurt with coconut and white chocolate pieces.
What is your motto/mantra: Life is what you make of it!
What quality do you most like in a man: A sense of humor! That’s why I married a comedian.
What trait do you most deplore in others: Intolerance.
What is your most marked characteristic: My height, I’m 5’10” without heels.
What is your idea of perfect happiness: The ability to travel at a moment’s notice. Fly me to the moon!
Which living person do you most admire: Lance Armstrong for his drive and determination. I love that man! He always goes for his dreams 100% despite age, cancer and other life obstacles.
Which words or phrases do you most overuse: That would have to be either “OMG” or “I heart that.”
Last time I cried: The last time I cried was when I crossed a 10k finish line in under 53 minutes! Running always makes me cry happy tears, especially when I beat a personal record (PR).
If you could meet anyone in the world who would it be and what would you say to them: Ohhhh, this is a tie between Lance Armstrong andChris Martin! I would ask Lance what motivates him to move mountains, and I would ask Chris what inspires him to write his beautiful music.
What do you consider the most overrated virtue: Caution. Take some risks!! You can’t conquer the world by sitting on your sofa.
What is your current state of mind: I am constantly asking myself how I can do more! Wheels are always turning.
What is your favorite journey: My favorite journey so far in life has been the past six months. I’ve lost 50 pounds by doing it the healthy way, and it’s opened a lot of doors. The diet I followed is a new eating plan by the editors of Health Magazine called CarbLovers, and because of my success I’ve been featured on The Rachael Ray Show and in the magazine itself!
What is your greatest achievement: To this day, it’s still the short film I wrote and directed in 2006 called Piece of Cake. I gave so much of myself to that project, and I’m still trying to top it!
How did you come up with the idea to launch your own blog:  One night while eating a monster-sized portion of spaghetti with my husband, I looked down at my 200 pound body and knew I needed a big change. He suggested that I start a weight-loss blog and share a photo of myself in a bikini once a week until I reached my goal. The idea scared me to death, which is exactly why I did it. Seven months later, I am the exact size I’ve always wanted to be! Now I use my blog for other personal goals such as completing my first Iron Man in 2011 and finishing my book.

In 2007 Angela Karen launched Birmingham Bombshells to accommodate the high number of old hollywood style portrait requests inundating her studio. Now she is nationally recognized for her pin-up pictorials, and Birmingham Bombshells has evolved into the city’s premier spot for vintage photography.
