10 SPOTS: Dining Ideas for September

Ted’s Restaurant

The sign is from another era, and the clocks are frozen in time, but Tasos and Beba Touloupis have turned Ted’s into a great tradition for a new Birmingham with a terrific breakfast and meat and three lunch.

328 12th St. S., Birmingham

The best of the Mediterranean right in the heart of Homewood. Try the Garides Scharas (grilled shrimp) basted with lemon juice and olive oil and roasted over a charcoal fire. Every weekday, you can enjoy 14 wine selections and five cocktails for $6 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

1831 28th Ave. S. Ste. 110, Homewood

Another Broken Egg
If you want to see the early morning deals going down, slide into a booth at this Mountain Brook breakfast emporium. The bananas foster waffles are decadent enough for a robber baron, let alone a captain of industry.

2418 Montevallo Road, Mountain Brook

El Barrio
El Barrio has brought the border to Second Avenue North with cool design, local ingredients and creative cuisine with a Mexican edge. Try the Grilled Chorizo Meatloaf with spinach, cotija-mashed potatoes and ranchera sauce.

2211 2nd Avenue North,  Birmingham

Village Tavern

This Summit spot has one of the best happy hours in town, Monday to Friday from 4  to 6:30 p.m. Any and every cocktail is half price. Village Tavern also has a great happy hour bar-food menu.

101 Summit Boulevard, The Summit

Becky’s South

Burgers and breakfast. The two don’t seem to go together very well, unless you are in Becky’s at 20 th St. and University. Then the idea of a great breakfast and perhaps a few hours later a great burger seems a sublimely perfect combination.

2009 University Boulevard, Birmingham

Century Restaurant & Bar

Fine dining in the Tutwiler Hotel is augmented with arguably (Oh, wait. Who wants to argue?) the best bartender in the city, Alan Brown. Order dinner at the bar and watch the shadows start to play on the stately old library building out the window.

2021 Park Place, Birmingham

Green Acres Café

The wings of perfection. Sounds like an old tagline from the advertising heyday of airlines. Alas, it is not. It should, however, be the slogan for Green Acres. Pair them up with fried green tomatoes and you will be flying to heaven.

1705 4th Ave. N., Birmingham

A restaurant and bar devoted to simplicity. Five entrees. Five snacks. Five red wines. Five white wines. Five beers. Five Southern beers. And five cocktails. We could get used to the simple life.

744 29th St South, Birmingham

Fox Valley Restaurant

Venture out to Maylene for the justifiably famous crab cakes at this venerable metro restaurant. Pair it with a filet mignon or just enjoy it all by its lonesome.

6743 Highway 17, Maylene
