CAUSE: AN IDEA FROM THE SEA NAMED CAPTAIN MAGEE

Story and Pictures by J.W. Butts

Birmingham native J.W. Butts needs your help.

Really, he just wants your money…

You see, the 25-year-old artist is promoting this Kickstarter campaign, with the hopes that he can raise enough money to publish a children’s book based on his illustrations of ocean animals.

And to say it like that, “his illustrations of ocean animals”, is kind of not doing the man justice.

Just look… See for yourself.

Full disclosure:  I haven’t met Butts in person, but we’ve exchanged a few emails. This local musician actually alerted me to the cause, and I was instantly intrigued. What a fantastic and incredibly bizarre book this is. It’s something I’d love to read to my two boys, knowing that we’d have to pause at each page to look, to let it fill their little heads, to explore the nuances, to experience the imagination…

By day, Butts works for Grow Alabama, and he also spends a few nights each week teaching young aspiring artists at Space One Eleven. He says the catalyst for the project was spontaneous, that he just started drawing and writing and learning throughout the process, and as time passed the book came to life.

Help this young local artist become a children's book author!

“As far as the illustrations for Captain Magee, I reference a real life picture that moves me and just draw what comes out from that reference in my own way. I rarely start with a set in stone idea; I will start with a general concept and it almost never turns out to be what I was thinking.”

We like what this illustrator is throwin’ down…on paper…with pens and pencils and markers and what not. In fact, it seems like there might be a bit of magic in his story…what an appropriate place to be creating something such as this.

Consider helping him out, will you? The schwag for backers is original artwork (and more), so it’s a win-win for all you art-lovin’ souls out there. (You know who you are.)

At the time of this post, Butts is just $1500 shy of his goal; there are only 31 days left for him to gather funds and rally support. Here’s the link again to the Kickstarter page. Go forth and support local art; make this young man’s dream become reality.

We promise to keep up with the soon-to-be-critically-acclaimed-children’s-book-author and will spread the good news when his goal has been met.

Good luck, J.W. Good luck, Captain Magee.
