Building the Dream Today at 6:00 PM UAB’s Heritage Hall 102
Honor the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have A Dream Speech,” with the UAB community today. The public is invited to a free screening of “ Building the Dream,” a documentary on the challenges organizers faced in creating the King Memorial in Washington, D.C. There will be a panel discussion featuring community leaders including educator and civil rights activist Odessa Woolfolk.

ArtPlay Parlor Music Series August 29 at 7:00 PM Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center
ArtPlay, the ASC‘s home for arts education and outreach, is highlighting the beauty and complexity of the cello with a series of presentations and educational events. Their first featured artist is Cicely Parnas, winner of the 2012 Young Concert Artists International Auditions. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will accompany the performance.

Sloss Furnaces Night Tour August 29 at 8:00 PM Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark
Ever wonder what Sloss is like at night? Get ready for a special night under the towering blast furnaces and smoke stacks. Guides will be on hand to lead people in an all-ages historical tour of the treasured landmark. This rare glimpse of the site isn’t meant to be scary, but be sure to bring a flashlight!

There’s no better place to be on a Saturday morning than Pepper Place Market. Come experience the best offerings from local farmers and artisans every Saturday–rain or shine. This week’s special music will be Marvin & Wayne and Sonny Pritchett. There will also be a live demo by a local chef!

Jazz in the Park
September 1 from 6 – 9:00 PM Beacon Park in Irondale
Magic City Smooth Jazz is pleased to present the fourth season of its Jazz in the Park summer concert series, which showcases national and area jazz artists. This week, the show will feature Rickey Powell, Laser’s Edge, and KB’s Technique. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, seat cushions, coolers and snacks to enjoy the concert. Note: this event was originally scheduled for 8/18 and, due to rain, has been rescheduled for 9/1.

► 22nd Annual Labor Day Celebration 9 AM – 4:00 PM Tannehill Ironworks Historic State Park
How does Tannehill State Park celebrate Labor Day each year? Why, with a moon pie eating contest, of course! Participate in the state’s largest moon pie eating contest and compete for prize money in both children and adult categories. Across the park, the United Mine Workers will be holding their annual Labor Day celebration. There will be plenty of good BBQ and some “picking and singing,” too!

Cheers to the Coosa Beer Dinner September 5 starting at 6:00 PM Avondale Brewing Co.
Get ready for Alabama’s first on-site charitable beer dinner! This farm-to-table dining experience will feature local food from Snow’s Bend Farm perfectly paired with Avondale beer. There will be eight different food-beer pairings stations, inviting guests to walk around to the various stations at their leisure to enjoy the pairings. Proceeds benefit Coosa Riverkeeper‘s efforts to keep the Coosa River clean and healthy.

Birmingham ArtWalk September 6-7 Birmingham Loft District
The annual ArtWalk transforms downtown Birmingham into an arts district, featuring the work of more than 100 visual artists, live musicians, and street performers. This much-anticipated, free event draws visitors from all over to see original works from local artists priced from the affordable to the extravagant. Friday night at the ArtWalk boasts a street festival atmosphere, while Saturday afternoon caters to a family crowd. Check out the full map for more information on venues and performances.

Brad Ryan Benefit Concert September 8 at 2:00 PM Alabama Theatre
Long time Three on a String member Brad Ryan recently underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor and kidney. Brad, who is now doing well in recovery, has brought joy to a lot of people through his music, and this concert is an opportunity to give back to him and his family. The show will feature Rick and Bubba, Three on a String, Sweetwater Road, and Rosewood, plus several others! The free concert will be accepting donations to support Brad and his family.
