This week, see downtown turn into a walking art gallery during the Birmingham Art Crawl, head to Collins Bar for a new popup concert series, witness the world’s largest monster truck show at the BJCC, and take part in a community-wide dance celebration. See you out and about!

Join B-Metro Magazine as we kick off 2016 with our biggest and most popular annual event celebrating the people who make Birmingham great. You’ll enjoy no cover, free parking, complimentary hors d’oeuvres by Slice Birmingham, and live music by The Yahoos String Band.

The ASO will perform orchestral works of local band and Communicating Vessels recording artists WRAY

The Writer’s Share
January 7, 8 p.m.
WorkPlay


Songwriters Jen Schott, Adam Hambrick, and Kelly Archer come to WorkPlay as part of a concert series featuring an eclectic mix of masters of the songwriter’s craft. These writers’ songs have been featured on the television show Nashville and been recorded by hit country artists.

 


The Black Cadillacs & Star and Micey

With members from each of Tennessee’s major cities, the state’s famous sounds are well represented through the music of The Black Cadillacs. Nashville’s recent brand of rock ‘n’ roll revival, Memphis’ soul, and Knoxville’s roots music combine to form an authentic and original sound.

 


Monster Jam
January 8-9

Come see the world’s largest and most famous monster truck tour featuring the biggest names in monster trucks including Strait Jacket, Instigator, Barbarian, Black Stallion, and the Carolina Crusher.

 


Best Books of 2015: Championship Tailgate Party
January 8, 4-5 p.m.
Hoover Public Library


Cheer for book talks of the library team’s favorite titles for kids and teens. Munch on tailgating food and win door prizes. This event is for parents, teachers, and fellow librarians.


 


Jim Norton
January 8-9
The Comedy Club Stardome


Comedian, radio personality, author, and actor Jim Norton is the co-host of The Opie with Jim Norton Show on Sirius XM Radio and currently has several comedy specials available on Hulu. He has regularly guest-starred on The Tonight Show, The Late Show with David Letterman, Louie, and Inside Amy Schumer.

 


Dance Across Birmingham
January 9, 9 a.m.- 5 p.m.

Take part in a community celebration that offers a day of free classes for anyone to experience dance in styles ranging from hip-hop, bellydance, praise dance, African dance, Latin dance, folk dance, and more.

 


Southeastern Outings Dayhike
January 9, 9 a.m.
Bankhead National Forest


Get energized with a six-mile hike following a beautiful trail which runs from the Brushy Creek Bridge along the creek. Hikers will be able to marvel at cliffs, hemlock trees, canyons, and waterfalls. Pack a picnic lunch.

 


Southern Bridal Show
January 10, 12-5 p.m.

Couples can meet with wedding professionals and photographers, taste samples of cakes and other foods from caterers, see gown and tuxedos featured on the fashion show runway, plan their honeymoon, and much more.

 


Opera Shots
January 12, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
The Collins Bar


This new annual series of pop-up concerts is held in unexpected places throughout the community and is designed to breakdown the stereotypes of opera. The event will feature members of the Opera Birmingham Chorus and guest artists presenting an open-mic-style concert of opera’s greatest hits and chorus favorites.
