Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Lecture

The 12th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Lecture will feature author Randall Jimerson, whose family moved to Birmingham in 1961 and fought for civil rights. Hear stories of the city during the civil rights movement and learn more about the Jimerson family experience during crucial Birmingham events.

This opera by Ambroise Thomas has been a huge hit in opera houses around the world, but it has never been produced in Alabama. The Opera Birmingham performance, a combination of orchestral French writing with classic Italian lyricism, will be sung in French but translated to English for a truly enjoyable opera.

The show that exploded off-Broadway in 1971 and has been performed worldwide ever since will make its debut at Birmingham-Southern College. The two-act production is a celebration of the Gospel according to Matthew through song and dance. You won’t want to miss this student production.

A Tribute to MLK Jr.
January 28 at 3PM
Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center 

Join the Alabama Symphony Orchestra for their annual concert celebrating the life, legacy and leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. The performance features the voices of The Aeolians of Oakwood University and the Lockhart Dance Theatre Youth Ensemble, hosted by Jeh Jeh Pruitt and conducted by Michael Morgan.

“Embracing Silence” Exhibit

Alabama Center for Architecture

The exciting photography exhibit, a display of black and white photos of local Moss Rock Preserve, features images of boulder fields, sandstone glades, waterfalls, native plants and wildlife. You won’t want to miss the work of Joseph De Sciose, winner of the Garden Globe Award for “Best Photography for a Garden Book.” 

 


Warhol Fabricated
Now through February 28
Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts- UAB

The works of legendary Andy Warhol will be on display in the first major show by an artist of global renown at UAB. Visitors can expect to view nine screen prints and 90 photographic prints owned by UAB along with loaned pieces from various national museums.
