The Annual Chenoweth Lecture presents “Ways of Seeing: The Art of Norman Rockwell” by Wanda M. Corn, Ph.D., the Robert and Ruth Halperin Professor Emerita in Art History, Department of Art and Art History, Stanford University. Corn is recognized for her distinguished work as guest curator for major exhibitions nationwide and her contributions as a respected author in the art world. This lecture will look at Norman Rockwell’s love of art history and the works of art he saw in museums. He often quoted from masterpieces in his illustrations and explored the different ways people look at and engage a work of art. Langston Hughes’ ‘Black Nativity’
Carver Theatre, 12/6 – 12/8, 7:00 PM

The Aldridge Repertory Theatre proudly presents five performances of Langston Hughes’ classic play “Black Nativity,” produced by special arrangement with The Dramatic Publishing Company of Woodstock, Illinois. The play is a beautiful celebration tells the Christmas story through singing, dancing and acting that delivers the powerful message of love, hope and joy. “Black Nativity” will showcase the talent of local artists-from the actors and set designers to the musicians and costume designer. ‘A Christmas Memory’
The Musical Adaptation
of the Truman Capote Classic

Virginia Samford Theatre, 12/6 – 12/23

The new musical adaptation of Truman Capote’s famous holiday story enjoys its Birmingham premiere at the Virginia Samford Theatre! Based on Capote’s sepia-hued memoir of his childhood, this new adaptation of ‘A Christmas Memory’ chronicles a young boy’s loving friendship with an eccentric aunt in a small Southern town in the 1930s, where misfits Buddy and Sook launch kites, haunt speakeasies, and mail fruitcakes to everyone from Jean Harlow to President Roosevelt. Directed by Jack Mann, and with music by Larry Grossman and lyrics by Carol Hall, rich poetry sings from the stage in this wistful memoir of cherished youth. If you’re in a “bah humbug” mood this holiday season, a seat at the uplifting musical ‘A Christmas Memory’ may be just the remedy! More details here

Bell Center Benefit

Monty Stabler Galleries

The opening reception for Wisconsin artist Christine Alfery blends with a benefit for the Bell Center in Homewood which provides important early intervention services to infants and toddlers who are at risk for developmental delay. Monty Stabler Galleries will donate 10% of all proceeds directly to a relay group running the Mercedes Marathon for the Bell Center.  The relay group for the Mercedes Marathon will be serving wine and beer donated from the Cahaba Brewery with tips supporting the effort as well. Birmingham residents Dolores Hydock and Bobby Horton headline ‘Southern Tales: Songs, Stories and Sing-a-Longs’, a charming holiday-themed afternoon showcasing stories, songs and sing-a-longs to warm the heart and welcome the holiday season. Dolores Hydock, an actress and story performer, joins the event for the third year. Bobby Horton, a newcomer to this event, has been a part of Birmingham’s Three on a String for the last 35 years. He has produced and performed music for thirteen Ken Burns documentaries, including The Civil War and Baseball. Horton is widely recognized as one of the country’s leading authorities on music from the Civil War period.
