Announcement about our June 2014 issue!

The Fight
In his new book, Positive, Birmingham’s own Dr. Michael Saag shares his experiences as a leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

In support of our June cover story, proceeds from B-Metro newsstand sales this month will be donated to The 1917 Clinic at UAB, which supports HIV care, awareness, and prevention.

The Three Little Kittens

Birmingham Children’s Theatre

Looking to keep your children entertained this summer? Birmingham Children’s Theatre presents its 2014 Summer Series, which kicks off with a production of The Three Little Kittens, a story about a young girl who travels to the Land of Lost and Found with her three furry kittens in search of her missing mittens.

Birmingham Brings Broadway

Dorothy Jemison Day Theater

This rainbow revue of Birmingham’s best LGBT-inspired showstoppers includes Carl Dean, Kristi Tingle Higginbotham, Jan Hunter, Lonnie Parsons, and Jenna Sayqua. The event is a joint fundraiser for PFLAG Birmingham and Equality Alabama, which both work to promote equality for the LGBT community in Alabama.

Birmingham Barons vs. Jackson Generals

Regions Field

The 2013 season proved to be one of the most memorable in the long and storied history of Birmingham baseball as the Barons celebrated their return to downtown with the franchise’s 14th Championship. Cheer on the Barons as they play against the Jackson Generals this week.

Birmingham Art Crawl

Downtown Loft District


On the first Thursday of every month, our city’s pool of creative talent will be showcased throughout the historic loft district. Art Crawl is a great way to meet local artists and performers, buy and appreciate their work, and be part of the rapidly growing art scene in Birmingham.

Steel City Jazz Festival

June 5 – 7

Linn Park

This inaugural event brings more than 25 smooth jazz recording artists from all over the country to Birmingham for one weekend only. This family-friendly festival, which is hosted by non-profit organization Empowerment, Inc., invites guests to bring picnic baskets, coolers, and chairs to kick back, relax, and enjoy the jazz.

Bards & Brews
June 6 at 7:00 PM
Bessemer Public Library

This free monthly event combines an open mic poetry slam with a craft beer tasting. Arrive early to enjoy live music before the poetry slam begins. This month, the beer tasting will be provided by Druid City Brewing Co. of Tuscaloosa.

Magic City Brewfest

Sloss Furnaces

Join Free the Hops for its 8th annual craft beer tasting event. There will be 200+ individual beers available including many rare, specialty and cask ales which have never been seen before in Alabama. You’ll also enjoy J. Clyde’s Alabama Cask Garden and a home brewing demo by Carboy Junkies.

“All in” Casino Royale

This 6th annual event offers the full casino experience with exciting games, exquisite food & drink, and live music. The event benefits UAB’s Healthy Happy Kids program, which aims to tackle childhood obesity in Birmingham elementary schools in low-income communities.

Black-Out Cancer Party
June 6 from 8 PM – 12 midnight
Iron City

It doesn’t matter whether you dress up or dress down…just wear black at this annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. The event will feature live music, a silent auction, and complimentary food, wine, and beer. Proceeds will go to the ACS for cancer research, education programs, advocacy efforts, and patient support.

Big Green Eggs in the Ham

Ross Bridge

Local cooks are putting their Big Green Egg cookers to the test to benefit Easter Seals of Birmingham. Delicious food samples cooked in Big Green Eggs will be available for tasting all day, and there will also a bouncy town for kids and live music–be sure to pack a cooler and bring a blanket or lawn chairs.

Juneteenth Culture Fest

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States; it celebrates not only African American freedom, but also liberty and justice for all cultures. The fun, family-oriented festival is hosted by the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and is free and open to the public.

The Red Barn in Leeds

This 7th annual event invites families out for a day of live music by Banditos, plenty of food, and even horse demonstrations. The event, which is free and open to the public, is the largest annual fundraiser for The Red Barn, a nonprofit that gives at-risk or disabled children and adults the opportunity to learn to ride horses.
