Tomorrow, celebrate Birmingham’s music scene with B-Metro  at our annual Music Issue Release Party! After reading about some of the best up-and-coming local bands in our August issue, come hear them yourself as they perform live at Iron City! This event is free with no cover–so grab your friends and get ready to enjoy music by JazzMine Garfield, Gabriel Tajeu, Feather Canyon, Downright, Velouria, La Resistance, and Early Americans!

Meet the Artist: Richard Taylor

Charlie Thigpen’s Garden Gallery

Richard Taylor‘s medium is concrete, and his inspiration comes from any object that he finds intriguing. Join the Garden Gallery to learn about his design inspiration and hear the captivating stories behind his art. There will also be a door prize drawing for a Richard Taylor original piece. A portion of proceeds will benefit Birmingham’s M-POWER Ministries.

John Hannah Book Launch

Former Alabama Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant once called John Hannah the greatest lineman he ever coached. The exclusive book signing for Hannah’s new autobiography, Offensive Conduct, is being held a full six weeks before it is scheduled to hit bookshelves nationwide. At the event, fans will be able to meet the Crimson Tide great, purchase an advance copy of Offensive Conduct, and enter a raffle for two free tickets to the Alabama vs. Colorado State football game on Sept. 21st.

 


Art After Dark

This Thursday, four local artists will have their artwork on display and available for purchase. The featured artists are jeweler Cecily Chaney, gourd artist Teresa Wamble, watercolor painter Fred Mobley, and photographer Jeremy Richter. Jazz guitarist Glen Butts will perform, and light refreshments will be served at this second annual event hosted by IberiaBank and the Fultondale Arts Council.


The Marvelous Wonderettes

This smash off-Broadway hit musical takes you back to the 1958 Springfield High School prom where we meet the

Wonderettes, four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts. As we learn about their lives and loves, we are treated to the girls performing such classic ’50s and ’60s songs as “Lollipop,” “Stupid Cupid,” “It’s My Party,” and over 20 other classic hits.

Doggie Work Days

One month ago, Birmingham area neighbors and animal lovers came together to begin clearing the site of Remy’s Dog Park–they were extremely successful, clearing two acres of land! Due to requests for another opportunity to prep the future site, this round two doggie work day invites volunteers to clip, clear and celebrate the future canine playground.

The ladies of Birmingham’s Tragic City Rollers will strap on their skates and hit the track for their last double-header home bout of the season! These roller derby gals face off against the Rome Roller Girls at 4:45 PM, and the Tragic City All-Stars battle it out with Mississippi Roller Girls at 7:00 PM. Bring a folding chair and grab a spot on the floor close to the track for the best experience–don’t forget to get your tickets

A Night of Big Stars

Join the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham for their 2nd annual fundraising gala that allows the organization to continue to provide mentors to children. The evening will consist of a cocktail hour, a live on-stage production, and a seated dinner. BBBS has partnered with ArtPlay in co-directing an onstage production consisting completely of “littles” in the BBBS program.

Sidewalk Film Festival

ArtPartners Live Auction and Showcase

This 11th annual event features a live and silent auction of collaborative works of art created by community artists and individuals with chronic illnesses and disabilities. Attendees will also enjoy music, beer, wine and great food from B&A Warehouse. Funds raised at the event enable VSA Alabama to continue providing opportunities in the arts to children and adults with chronic illnesses and disabilities. Make sure to get your tickets in advance!
