Birmingham Festival Theatre

Racial discord, gentrification, and fifty years of change.  Sound familiar? Set in a house in Chicago, but in two acts fifty years apart, the play focuses first on a black family moving into a white neighborhood, and then five decades later, a white family moving into the same house, now a part of a predominantly black neighborhood. More than simply a “message play,” this story boasts biting comedy, smart dialogue, and wide accessibility.

33rd Annual Original Birmingham Oktoberfest

Das Haus German Club

Celebrate German culture at this annual event with the Friends of the German Speaking and Culture (FDSK). Friday and Saturday night will be accompanied by live music by Europa, and traditional German meals will also be served at this three-day event. This original fashion event proves that being environmentally friendly is not only easy but always in style. The event benefits the Alabama Environmental Council and showcases exclusive designs by organic Birmingham fashion line Earth Creations and jewelry by local boutique Charm.

Celebrate 50 Years Forward 

To Kill a Mockingbird

The VST is proud to bring Harper Lee’s classic to stage as part of the 50th Anniversary commemoration of the Civil Rights Movement. Set in Maycomb, Alabama in the middle of the Great Depression, this stage adaptation of Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel sees racial injustice envelop a small town. Through courage and compassion, lawyer Atticus Finch seeks the truth, and his daughter, Scout brings new hope to a community in turmoil.

International Street Fair

4 Little Girls Memorial Fund Reception
September 14 at 5:30 PM
Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

Regions Bank and The Memorial Fund for the Four Children Committee host this fundraising event that honors the four girls killed in the 1963 bombing of 16th Street Baptist Church. Families of the four girls and past college scholarship recipients of The Memorial Fund for the Four Children will be recognized at this free community event. 


BBVA Compass Concert for Human Rights
September 14 at 7:00 PM

This incredible concert to celebrate “50 Years Forward” for Birmingham will be hosted by singer, actor, and comedian Jamie Foxx. There will also be performances by Grammy award-winning singer  Jill Scott and 2013 BET Lifetime Achievement honoree Charlie Wilson. Civil rights leaders will make appearances as well. Don’t miss this big night in Birmingham!

Empowerment Week Commemoration Event

A concert by the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Red Mountain Theatre Company and Real Life Poets commemorates the 50th Anniversary of 1963, a seminal year for the Civil Rights Movement. Enjoy wonderful live music by these local groups at this free, public event.

This outdoor event for all ages highlights sickle cell awareness month while supporting the arts. Families are encouraged to bring their picnic baskets and blankets to enjoy music by local artists, including JazzMine Garfield, Mile Marker 7, and the ASFA Jazz Ensemble. Vehicles from Life South Community Blood Center and Be the Match will also be on site taking blood donations and adding people to the blood marrow register.


10th Annual Glenn Estess, Sr. Golf Tournament

Highland Park Golf Course

This annual golf tournament honors Glenn Estess, Sr., former president of the Rotary Club of Shades Valley. Proceeds from the tournament will go to service projects within the community to support local civic and charitable organizations. The tournament format is a four-person scramble, and individuals and teams from outside the club are invited to participate.
