Mark your calendars for Magic City Mix 2013! Celebrate Birmingham’s music scene with B-Metro at our annual Music Issue Release Party! After reading about some of the best up-and-coming local bands in our August issue, come hear them yourself as they perform live at Iron City! This event is free with no cover–so grab your friends and get ready to enjoy music by JazzMine Garfield, Gabriel Tajeu, Feather Canyon, Downright, Velouria, La Resistance, and Early Americans!

Cooking for a Cause

The United Way Young Leaders Society is proud to host this 3rd annual fundraising event. Chef Chris Vizzina, alongside chefs from El Barrio, Saw’s Soul Kitchen, Silvertron Cafe and Brick & Tin will present healthy appetizers accompanied by live music and a silent auction. Funds raised will benefit Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities–a project of the Jefferson County Health Action Partnership focusing on combating childhood obesity.

Rally for Reading
August 1 from 6 – 9 PM
B&A Warehouse

Get off the sidelines and join The Literacy Council’s Junior Board to kick off the college football season with the 3rd Annual Rally for Reading! This fundraising event will feature live music from the Chad Fisher Group, a live and silent auction, plus fabulous food and drinks. Funds raised will help support The Literacy Council‘s efforts to change lives through their adult literacy and ESOL programs.

The Taste of Birmingham

This annual event benefiting the Birmingham Boys Choir features the nationally-recognized cuisine of Birmingham’s top restaurants. This mouth-watering evening is accompanied by award-winning entertainment provided by the choir and sparkling fireworks over the city. The Birmingham Boys Choir, which has provided more than three decades of classical, contemporary and sacred selections to audiences, serves to inspire excellence in performance and exemplifies the best of Birmingham traditions.

Secret Stages

Birmingham’s Music Discovery Festival

Historic Loft District Downtown

The spirit of Secret Stages celebrates what is coming next in the world of music. In both of its first years, Secret Stages brought thousands of people to downtown Birmingham, where for two nights, a diverse group of music enthusiasts were treated to over 80 bands and a dozen comedians performing on eleven different stages. These acts were drawn from the nation, the region, and our own backyard. Secret Stages 2013 is sure to keep that spirit alive!

“Born to Love” Fashion Show
August 3 at 7:00 PM
a.k.a. Girl Stuff in Homewood

Let’s hear it for the girls! Come check out the first annual fashion show fundraiser for Big Oak Ranch, an organization that provides housing for kids needing a chance. The girls from the Ranch are excited to be modeling clothing from a.k.a. Girl Stuff. 100% of donations and 10% of proceeds from the store will go towards Big Oak Ranch. Come enjoy some great fashion and support a worthy cause!

Redemptive Cycles Grand Opening
August 3 from 12 – 4 PM

Redemptive Cycles moved to a new shop this month, and they want to celebrate with you! Join them at their new location at  1305 2nd Ave North for food, beer, and tall bikes to ride.

This non-profit bike shop aims to provide quality, affordable bicycles through the sale of used bikes and new/used bike parts as well as the service of bike repair.


Jazz in the Park

Magic City Smooth Jazz is pleased to present the fourth season of its Jazz in the Park summer concert series, which showcases national and area jazz artists. This week, the show will feature Take 7, Foxxy Fatts, and Julian Vaughn. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, seat cushions, coolers and snacks to enjoy the concert.

i Gives Back

IBERIABANK is launching its “i Gives Back” campaign this month with the collection of school supplies for children in need at Fultondale Elementary School in Fultondale, AL.   Through August 14, the community can donate new school supplies–such as notebooks, backpacks, folders etc.–at any of IBERIABANK’s eight Birmingham locations.
