Opera Birmingham Presents Mozart’s
“The Magic Flute”

The Magic Flute” follows the adventures of handsome Prince Tamino and Papageno, the hapless bird catcher, as they set forth to save the captured Princess Pamina. Endlessly inventive, charmingly fantastical and utterly unique, Mozart’s final opera is a profound yet lighthearted tale of romantic love, spiritual transcendence and the beguiling art of bird catching. Enjoy the beauty of the original language and understand it all with English translations (projected on a screen above the stage for each opera) sharing every plot twist and turn! This mesmerizing, fully-staged production will feature the Opera Birmingham principal singers and chorus, and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Marc Astafan with Maestro Israel Gursky conducting. “52 Canvases in my 40th Year”
by Jenni Adkins Horne

Naked Art Gallery, 3/15, 5:00 = 9:00 PM

Jenni Adkins Horne created 52 canvases in her 40th year. Her artistic journey was documented in her blog and the paintings will appear in a table top book, including photos of the opening reception. Each week, Jenni Adkins Horne painted one canvas and shared her thoughts and ideas about the canvas on her blog. No cheating, one a week for a year. 52 paintings. 40% of the proceeds from this show will go to the Angel House, a shelter for teen girls. This art opening is hosted by Naked Art Gallery in coordination with Third Friday in Forest Park and South Avondale. The Blind Boys of Alabama
with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra

Alys Stephens Center, 3/16, 8:00 PM

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Music presents The Blind Boys of Alabama with Conductor, Dr. Henry Panion, III and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra commemorating the 50 year anniversary of the Birmingham Civil Rights Movement. The Blind Boys of Alabama formed at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in 1939. The group toiled for 40 years almost exclusively on the black gospel circuit; playing in churches, auditoriums and stadiums across the country. The group performed for Martin Luther King Jr. at civil rights benefit events. Now the group is recognized worldwide as living legends of gospel music. Presented in conjunction with the biennial conference in Birmingham of the National Association for the Study and Performance of African-American Music, the concert is a fundraiser for the UAB Stevie Wonder Music Technology Scholarship Endowment FundMore details here

This will be the Coalmen’s first show at the Plaza, so you don’t want to miss this one! What would happen if Hot Southern Porch went Irish? Hot Irish Pub, that’s what. This twist on an ETC favorite will have you more ready to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day than a fountain of green beer. Classes, lifestyles, and values collide hilariously in fiery clashes at the local pub. Will there be a leprechaun? A Bigfoot? A hobo? Will the pub survive the celebration? Will Ireland? The Arc of Jefferson County’s Junior Board proudly presents the Inaugural Shamrock Shindig! This St. Patrick’s Day themed event will feature live music, food, prizes, and a great opportunity to give back. With the Luck of the Irish flowing, the raffle is a good bet and worth a lot of “green” with a 2013 Nissan Versa or $10,000 cash as the Grand Prize. Kick-off St. Patrick’s Day early in Five Points South with the 29th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade presented by REV Birmingham. Saturday, March 16 is the day to come early, get some brunch at 11:00 AM and then stake out your spot for best parade viewing. Birmingham’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade features colorful floats, bagpipe bands, costumed characters, car clubs, uniformed organizations, Irish dance schools, Irish bands and more! Moonlight on the Mountain

Moonlight on the Mountain and The Friends of Old Time Music & Dance (FOOTMAD) present a St. Patrick’s Day concert with The Rosin Sisters from Atlanta–3 women fiddlers who also play banjo and guitar and sing a wide range of folk music, with special attention to the Appalachians and Southern Region of the U.S. Members are Barbara Panter, Jan Smith and Ann Whitley. Their love of the music shows in every note they sing and play. Irish Potluck & Open Mic Class

Freshfully’s Sunday School class for March 17th will be an Irish potluck! Register to bring a dish, and come enjoy a St. Patrick’s Day feast! The folks at Freshfully will also be teaching how to make Irish Colcannon, a delicious dish made with potatoes and kale. This St. Patty’s Day, join the Druid City Garden Project and Little Savannah Restaurant for Swine & Wine. This outstanding event draws chefs from some of Birmingham’s finest restaurants and the best guest chefs from out of town. The idea is simple: the chefs get together to roast some pigs overnight, make some delicious side dishes, and serve a big family style meal. And that’s just the swine. Lately, multi-instrumentalist and music historian Bobby Horton has been considering Alabama’s amazing vernacular music tradition. Bobby Horton: Music, Migration, and Industrial Birmingham is the result of his contemplation. In this concert and discussion, Horton will explore the connections between music of the rural South and music that traveled into Birmingham. Performing blues and gospel straight from Alabama’s Black Belt, as well as selections rooted firmly in industrial Birmingham, Horton will relate a wide-ranging musical story, through a variety of instruments, offering historical commentary as he works through a set list like no other.
