Birmingham Restaurant Week begins, BBQ madness stokes Sloss Furnace and B-Metro parties like it’s August 2012 (Our annual Music Issue party!) It may be the end of summer, but the good stuff is just getting started…with hopes that you get to B-There!

Sneak a Peek and a Taste of Birmingham Restaurant Week
Vulcan Park & Museum,
August 15, 5:30 – 8:3
0 PM

Chefs from more than 10 participating restaurants will serve samples of their most popular menu items at the event, which will benefit Vulcan Park and Museum/Vulcan Foundation. Tickets are $25 advance/$30 door (couples $40/$45) The price of admission includes food, entertainment, wine samples from Rush Wines, beer samples from Avondale Brewery & Good People Brewing and entrance to Museum and Observation towers tour. Restaurants providing samples for the Preview Party are Nabeel’s, Maki Fresh, Silvertron Café, VINO, Ted’s Restaurant, Michael’s Restaurant, Frio en La Paz, Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q, Little Donkey and Rogue Tavern. ArtWalk 2012 Preamble
Rogue Tavern, August 16, 5:30 – 10:30

One of the city’s signature art outings that drives the annual ArtWalk event, the Artwalk Preamble is a lively evening for folks to preview the talent artists that put Birmingham on the art world map!  For a $10 donation you can amble among over 100 works of art at Rogue Tavern, join the silent auction – and perhaps own a beautiful bit of ArtWalk by evening’s end as well! An additional $10 secures all the Good People brews you like!  Amble on over and join good people and good company, to celebrate good times and great art at this benefit for the upcoming ArtWalk! B-Metro Magazine Celebrates the Big ‘Music Issue’ with “MAGIC CITY MIX” Party at Bottletree!

B-Metro invites YOU to be our guest for a night of exciting new music. Some of the brightest stars on Birmingham’s burgeoning music scene take the stage at Bottletree to bring the 2nd Annual B-Metro Music Issue to life! Starting at 6 pm, five of the artists featured in the August issue of B-Metro will take the stage at one of the country’s coolest venues. Come out and hear Juka Tribe, MackONE, To Light a Fire, St. Paul & the Broken Bones and Bunny Austin.  No cover, so this deal just gets better and better! VINO Van Gogh: A Wine & Art Benefit for UCP
B&A Warehouse, August 16, 6:00 – 10:00 PM

The United Cerebral Palsy Junior Board will host Vino & Van Gogh at B&A Warehouse, an event for wine and art lovers. On August 16, join us to wind down the summer.  Enjoy food, live music from The Pineapple Skinners, browse the work of local artists, and taste a selection of wines – all for a great cause.  All proceeds benefit United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham, helping children and adults with disabilities live life without limits. Tom Williams Porsche will host the ‘Driving and Diamond’ Event benefiting Make-A-Wish Alabama this Thursday, August 16! Visitors will enjoy live entertainment, door prizes and fantastic food (provided courtesy of George Sarris of Yellow Bicycle Catering and The Fish Market Restaurant). A Robot Show

Naked Art Gallery, August 17, 5:00 – 9:00 PM

A robot-themed exhibition featuring art by John Lytle Wilson, Elise McClellan, Alisha Case, Delaine Derry Green, and Eric Johnson opens Friday night in coordination with Forest Park’s Third Friday. Headline artist John Lytle Wilson mastered his techniques at Birmingham-Southern College and Florida State University, and served as Artist in Residence at 621 Gallery in Tallahassee. He has a national exhibition record, has been featured in several magazines and has enjoyed special appreciation for his “corrected paintings” (where an artist failed to include monkeys, robots, explosions etc. in the painting, Lytle has corrected these oversights on the original canvases – creating whole new works of art).  Get your robot on at Naked Art during this show!  More details here

Stokin’ the Fire BBQ Festival
Sloss Furnaces, August 18, 2:00 – 7:00 PM

Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark will host the 8th annual’ Stokin’ the Fire BBQ Festival’ at the historic Sloss Furnaces. At the cornerstone of the event is a world class BBQ competition featuring over 80 local BBQ teams – all vying for the braggin’ rights to be the best Q in ‘Ham. Grill masters compete in two divisions: backyard grillers (graded by Volunteer & KCBS judges), and the People’s Choice competition (judged by the bellies of the public). In addition to the BBQ battles, the festival includes art demonstrations by Sloss Furnaces metal arts staff, Cajun dancing demonstrations, barbecue sampling, a kids’ zone and live music from Just a Few Cats and Grammy-nominated Alvin Garrett. Your appetite for barbeque and good times will help preserve Sloss Furnaces… that’s a good thing! More details here

Beer Saturdays:
Raising a Glass to Birmingham Restaurant Week

Dave’s Pub, August 18 & 25, 1:00 – 3:00 PM

Birmingham Restaurant Week (BRW) is expanding the culinary affair to now include “Beer Saturday” events among its festivities. Presenting co-sponsors Brighthouse Network Business Solutions and Dave’s Pub, along with supporting sponsors Avondale Brewery and Good People Brewery, will host these two events Saturday, August 18 and 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Dave’s Pub, located in Five Points South. Designed to add more flavor to the ingredients that make up BRW, the beer tasting will cover the following: the brewing process, what ingredients influence flavor and potency and how your glass can enhance your drinking enjoyment. During the tasting, guests will get to sample a selection of beer from both breweries. After enjoying a fall Saturday afternoon of local brews, a frosty brew of your choice comes with your ticket ($10 advance, $15 at the door). More details here
