Design Week Birmingham
This week, through 10/28

Design Week is a multi-faceted event that unites architects, graphic designers, interior designers, landscape architects and industrial designers to promote, discuss, and celebrate great design and its relevance to everyday life. For a full schedule of DWB events, check out their event calendar.


Discovering Hope
Tonight from 5:30 – 7:30 PM
Kress Building

George Sarris of The Fish Market in Southside will host this inaugural benefit for The Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s of Alabama. The event will feature live music, hors d’oeuvres, spirits and a live auction–it is sure to be a great time for a great cause.


Fall Extravaganza

Vestavia Hills Country Club

The Ballet Women’s Committee is proud to present the 2013 Fall Extravaganza to benefit the Alabama Ballet. Just in time to kick off holiday shopping, this year’s event opens with a silent auction featuring local Birmingham businesses. Attendees can also browse The Shoppe, enter to win fabulous door prizes, and enjoy a seated luncheon and fashion show. For tickets, call Amy Miller (823-5368) or Frances Knox (936-8062)


Taste of the Magic City

Silvertron Cafe

Silvertron Café has been a Birmingham institution for 25 years, offering comforting food for the whole family in a warm, relaxed atmosphere. Dine at Silvertron this Thursday, and they will donate 20% of dinner sales to M-POWER Ministries.

Voices & Vino: A Chorus Revue
October 24 at 6:00 PM

Kick off National Opera Week with this celebratory introduction to Opera Birmingham‘s spectacular 2013-14 season of performances. At this third annual event, the audience has the chance to select the evening’s “musical menu” by bidding on offerings of arias and songs to be performed.

Music & Miracles Radiothon
October 25 & 26
Broadcast live from Children’s of Alabama

This annual radiothon will air live on Magic 96.5 on 10/25 from 6am – 6pm  and on 103.7 The Q on 10/26 from 8am – 5pm. Several brave patients from Children’s will be performing during the radiothon, and local personalities will help the cause. Every dollar raised benefits Children’s of Alabama in obtaining the resources they need to provide the best healthcare to all children in the state.

Community Garden Bike Tour
October 26 from 9 AM – 11:30 AM
Freshfully in Avondale

Join the Community Garden Coalition and Stan Palla, the executive director of the Alabama Bicycle Coalition, on an 11-mile bike tour including community gardens in the Avondale and Norwood neighborhoods, plus the Jones Valley Teaching Farm. The tour starts and finishes at Freshfully, ending just in time for lunch at the cafe!

2013 Magic City Classic

Legion Field

The 72nd annual Magic City Classic is happening this weekend at the legendary Legion Field. Throughout the week, enjoy pre-game events and activities, and start your day early on the 26th with the McDonald’s Magic City Classic Parade at 8 AM. Montevallo ArtStalk
October 26 from 3 – 7:00 PM
Downtown Montevallo

This second annual Halloween-themed ArtWalk offers a “street party” vibe with 60+ artists from local counties and live music. Birmingham Ballet will be dancing a “thriller” of a performance, and all guests are encouraged to dress in costume for the event… there will even be a campus ghost walk at 7 PM! Kids’ activities and door prizes will be included at the event.

Friedman Family Foundation  

Jewish Food Festival

October 27 from 11 AM – 2:00 PM

This 11th annual food fest offers traditional Jewish foods cooked in-house within a fun family atmosphere. And, as always, the famous LJCC Bake Sale will be open. Adding to the festivities, the N.E. Miles Jewish Day School will be having its “Go Green!” family fair with lots of crafts and activities.

Barking at the Moon Festival

Fultondale Bark Park

This second annual festival is for the dogs…really! Hosted by the Friends of Fultondale Bark Park and Mercy Animal Hospital, the event includes numerous vendors, a dog pageant, a kids’ costume contest, and the Flying Frizbee Houndz Trick Dog Show.

Vulcan AfterTunes
October 27 at 3:00 PM
Vulcan Park

This fall, enjoy cool tunes, fresh brews and sweet views on Sunday afternoons with your favorite cast iron statue, Vulcan. Chill out in Birmingham’s backyard and end your week with some of the area’s best music while witnessing spectacular views of Birmingham’s city skyline. This week will be the final Vulcan AfterTunes event of the year and features Leon Redbone with opening act Dead Fingers.


Food Truck Pop-Up

Who doesn’t love the diverse food trucks in our city? Next week, REVIVE Birmingham is taking over a vacant lot in the historic Woodlawn neighborhood and giving it to the Food Truck Fleet. REVIVE invites young and old to come and spend their lunch break at this pop-up foodie park.


Crazy Sista Beach Party

LuLu’s in Gulf Shores, AL

Up for an out-of-town weekend of food, fun, and music for all the crazy sistas and the men who love them? Head to Gulf Shores for live music performances by acts including Marcia Ball, Tedeschi Trucks Band, and the Joyful Spirit of New Orleans Choir. The Crazy Sista Beach Party is the inaugural fundraiser LuLu’s founder Lucy Buffett and her restaurant group to support women’s empowerment organizations.

Veterans Park

This annual, family-friendly event includes hayrides around the park and a large exhibitor pavilion where children can gather treats throughout the night. Enjoy food vendors, balloon artists, face painting, and a foam pit–you can even get your photo taken with princesses and Prince Charming!

Chefs vs. Surgeons Pumpkin Carving Contest

October 26 at 10:30 AM
Pepper Place

At this third annual event, three surgeons from St. Vincent’s Health System compete against three local chefs for the title of “Most Creative Carved Pumpkin“! Watch as the teams go at it with scalpels, picks and knives–it’s a fun, family-friendly event just in time for Halloween. Shop for locally grown pumpkins and enjoy hot coffee and hot chocolate while you’re there.

Alabama Wildlife Center

Learn about the fascinating lives of owls and their importance to a healthy ecosystem. Guest owls from area wildlife organizations will be joining this kid-friendly day celebration, which includes games & activities, cookie decorating, kids’ arts & crafts, owl story time, and a birds of prey presentation.


Oak Hill Cemetery Tour

October 27 from 12 – 4:00 PM
Oak Hill Cemetery

Learn a little more about the history of Birmingham and meet some amazing people from the past. There will be a widow discussing Victorian burial practices, Charles Linn discussing his early pirating days, James Sloss discussing the early steel and mining industries, and many other interesting folks, so join the fun!

Boo at the Zoo

“Boo at the Zoo” presented by Wells Fargo invites guests to wear their favorite family-friendly costume and watch as the zoo transforms into a destination of spooky attractions, trick-or-treating, themed rides and games.  Magic City Zombie Fest

Alabama Theatre & McWane Science Center

What happens when you combine the Halloween classic Night of the Living Dead with a spooktacular party on McWane’s plaza? The first-ever Magic City Zombie Fest! Get into your best zombie costume and creep to downtown Birmingham for a night of food, fun, and flesh-eaters. The festivities begin with the film screening and will be followed immediately by a party on the plaza with music, a costume contest and other undead activities.

BOO Halloween Party

B&A Warehouse

The annual BOO Halloween Party is back and ready to haunt the halls of the B&A Warehouse. Enjoy live entertainment or take the stage yourself in “Scary”-oke chamber of karaoke. Capture your BOO experience in the photo booth and indulge in libations at one of B&A’s three bars. A portion of proceeds will benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of AL.
