Theatre UAB Presents: “Charley’s Aunt”
Sirote Theatre, Alys Stephens Center, 2/20 – 2/24

‘Charley’s Aunt’ is a farce written by Brandon Thomas more than 120 years ago. It was a success in London and on Broadway, breaking box-office records and has enjoyed countless stage and film adaptations – and now Theatre UAB brings this delightful play to the stage in Birmingham! Oxford University student Charley Wykham and his roommate Jack desperately wish to propose to their sweethearts before they go abroad. Decorum dictates a chaperone and whom better than Charley’s Aunt Donna Lucia d’Alvadorez, widow of a Brazilian (where the nuts come from) millionaire? That is, until she cancels at the last minute. Not to be undone, the boys recruit undergraduate Lord Fancourt “Babs” Babberley (who is jolly good at amateur theatricals,) to impersonate the absentee aunt, sparking a delightful misadventure of young love and outlandish deception. With slapstick, wit and a bit of cross-dressing, Theatre UAB presents a laugh-out-loud misadventure of a show perfect for all ages! More details here

Holly Williams
w/ Logan Brill

WorkPlay, 2/22, 8:00

Part of the key to Holly Williams’ success as a singer-songwriter is that it’s never been her mission to try and live up to the legacy cast by her famous and prolific father and grandfather – Hank Jr. and Sr., respectively – nor has she spent a lot of time trying to live it down. The respect that Holly has garnered as an artist over the course of many years spent building an international fan base, and the release of two acclaimed albums, The Ones We Never Knew and Here With Me, has come on her own terms, based on her own sound. Indeed, to paraphrase Freud, sometimes a last name is just a last name. The Highway finds the 31-year-old artist putting a distinctly personal spin on universal themes like love, loss, conflict, family and desire. Heavy with references to memories of simpler times and beloved relatives and an earnest longing for the road, travel part of The Highway with Holly Williams at WorkPlay on February 22nd!
