At the Alabama: ‘The Artist
The Alabama Theatre, 11/8, 7:00 PM

Critically acclaimed film, ‘The Artist’ tells the tale of a silent movie star who meets a young dancer, but the arrival of talking pictures sends their careers in opposite directions. ‘The Artist’ was nominated for ten Academy Awards and won five, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Jean Dujardin, the first French actor ever to collect the honor. Part of the Michael J. and Mary Ann Freeman Theatre and Dance Series: King Lear by William Shakespeare is the bard’s mighty master stroke of tragedy and philosophy. This classic work is ripe with tension, action and characters that rank among Shakespeare’s most accessible to modern audiences. If you have never been a fan of Shakespeare, prepare to have your mind changed as guest artist Elizabeth Hunter (Muse of Fire) brings her extraordinary creative vision to the Samford stage!

Trixie Whitley Band
Bottletree Cafe, 11/9, 9:00 PM

Belgian singer-songwriter, Trixie Whitley was touring Europe by age 11 with several theater companies, and, at the age of 14, with the renowned dance company, “Les Ballets C de la B,” as an actor, singer, dancer, and musician. During this same period, Trixie also became known as the youngest resident DJ in Europe, embraced by Belgium’s Museum of Modern Art and spinning at raves, festivals, and parties in Brussels, Paris, New York City, and Amsterdam. She later captivated audiences with her soulful voice as a member of Black Dub. She has continued to collaborate with some of the world’s finest musicians and producers including Robert Plant, Stephen Barber, Marianne Faithfull, among many others. Enjoy a unique Christmas shopping experience at Briarwood Christmas Shop, a community holiday tradition for more than twenty years.  The 2012 shop will feature fine gifts, treasures and home decor exhibited by recognized merchants and talented artisans.  Get in the holiday spirit early on Thursday, November 8th from Noon until 8:00 pm and Friday, November 9th from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm at the Fellowship Hall at Briarwood Presbyterian Church.  This free event is hosted by Briarwood Christian High School. The Illuminations Ball

The Children’s of Alabama Illuminations Ball, presented by Protective Life Corporation, will include a seated dinner with live music from The Ray Reach Band, and both silent and live auctions conducted by King Benefit Auctions.  Approximately 40 spectacular trees are exhibited as part of the Illuminations tree program held each year in conjunction with this shimmering event. The tree display will move both the McWane Building and Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children lobbies from November 12 through December 3 and families across the state are invited to visit Children’s to see lights, exquisitely designed Christmas trees, holiday décor and to enjoy the spirit that encompasses this special time of year.  The Ball will be beautiful and the tree displays, divine – with Children’s of Alabama at the heart of it all! National Veterans Day in Birmingham

Recognized as the nation’s oldest and largest Veterans Day celebration, National Veterans Day in Birmingham salutes those men and women who have served their country as members of the armed services and those today who proudly wear the uniform of the active, reserve, and national guard forces. As part of the community-wide celebration of Veterans Day, UAB will premiere a film made by award-winning filmmaker June Morgan Mack, M.F.A. The film, a personal documentary about the filmmaker’s family, “Lest We Forget: A French Village Recalls 1944,” is the true story of a Springville, Alabama family’s WW II connections to a small French town and the journey they took together. Local Middle Eastern dance troupe Zivah Saphirah presents an evening of international dance. Branching out beyond the dances of the Middle East, performers will offer a new glimpse into more forms of international dance.  Dance performances will range in styles to include Egyptian Cabaret, Tribal Fusion, Gypsy Punk, French Can-Can, Tahitian, Hula, Tribal Style (ATS), Khaleeji (Saudi Gulf), Turkish, and Brazilian Samba. Guest artists include Devyani, Firefly, Ilya, Rebecca and Sumaya with live percussion by Jay Burnham, Mark Freeman and Rich Miller. Four Seasons Gallery & Birmingham AIDS Outreach invite you to a fabulous evening of art featuring artists Lorrie Lane & Jayne Harrison. Lorrie Lane is represented by many galleries throughout the Southeast and Bentley Publishing Group. She is a resident studio artist at the Kentuck Art Center in Northport. Jayne Harrison, an award winning sculptor and Artist in Residence at Hoover High School, lives, works, teaches, and shows in the Birmingham area. During the event 10% of sales will be donated by BAO. From November 15th to November 30th, 10% of sales will be donated to BAO as well! The Wright Center Presents Series begins with the Eisenhower Dance Ensemble. This acclaimed modern dance troupe will be presenting an incredible evening of work entitled NewDANCEfest, a collection of dances by five respected choreographers.
