B-yourself: Cheryl Myers

Cheryl Myers

Name: Cheryl Myers

Age: 51 and glad about it. I celebrated turning 50 for 18 months, ending a week before turning 51 with a New Orlreans Second Line in Highland Park with my family, friends, musicians, and dinner at Hot & Hot Fish Club. It was a blast!!

My hometown: Don’t claim one, Air Force brat…My parents live in Montgomery, a place I never really liked.

Profession: HR Manager

My passion: My fiancé, Robert Washington, Jr. There is never a dull moment with him.

Who most inspires you? My parents…they are hard-working, giving people without being showy about it. My dad will be 75 this month and he stills works at the post office. My mom is 73 and enjoys being retired and volunteering. I’m following her path.

When were you happiest? Now! Life just gets better and better. I was so excited about turning 50 because it’s always been the you-better-have-it-together marker for me.

What is your most marked characteristic? Enjoying life… I’m an experience junkie, nothing death-defying. I love seeing new places, the arts, or just enjoying a great meal with great friends. I’m known as a resource for the best restaurants, especially for dessert.

Most treasured possession: Memories of great life experiences

I am guilty of: Being a dessert-aholic…my current raves are Dreamcakes cupcakes and Red Mango yogurt.

What is your greatest extravagance? Travel and art…I’ve flown to Chicago and Philly for a concert and I’ll splurge on a great piece of art and distinctive jewelry falls in that category for me.

Guilty pleasure: TV…the DVR is the best invention since the television.

What is your greatest fear? Losing my health. I had a mini-stroke in 2005 with no risk factors for stroke. That greatly impacted how I view life and I’m very blessed to be in great health today.

Heroes: The people, in spite of the worst odds, who persist and make it through

Greatest regret: It’s pointless to regret, keep moving forward, but if I had to answer, it would be not knowing my maternal grandfather, a Southern Illinois coal miner who raised five children by himself.

What is your motto/mantra? Trust, Hope, Pray, Live, Laugh, Love

One day I hope to… Be free from a daily schedule. I have so many places to see, books to read

Quality you most like in a woman: Courage and  grit…this world still doesn’t fully acknowledge our value.

What is your most marked characteristic? Internal: Supporting and encouraging people. External: My shaved hairstyle

What is your idea of perfect happiness? Heaven…even the best experiences have some flaws, particularly if people are involved. I just don’t dwell on them.

Which living person do you most admire? My mom. Growing up, my dad was gone a lot with the Air Force and she was totally focused on raising me and my sister to be independent, respectful women.

If you could meet anyone in the world who would it be and what would you say to them? Jesus, am I doing your will?

Last time I cried: This morning, it releases toxins

Favorite journey or trip: Italy with my fiancé. I had dreamed of visiting the Amalfi Coast since they featured it on As The World Turns more than 20 years ago. It was our first trip together and it was Fabulous!

What is your greatest achievement? Making a positive difference in the lives of others. I do believe in paying forward the blessings.

What is your current state of mind? Thankful! Every day is a gift.

You can never have too many… Reasons to be grateful
