What is Revolve?  24/7 fitness facility

Tell us how Revolve started… Revolve was opened in the fall of 2009.  I took over at GM Nov 1, 2011 and owner on Jan. 1, 2015

What does the name Revolve stand for? I believe there is more to fitness than just going to the gym a few times a week for a workout.  Fitness should revolve around your family, friends and community.  Our business revolves around the community of Ross Bridge and we work hard to help build a healthier community

How did you get into personal training? In 2005 I started working part time as a staff member at a small, local gym in Florence AL where I lived at the time.  I was very fortunate that my boss saw potential in me. He started encouraging and mentoring me in my journey to become a personal trainer.  March of 2007 I moved to the Birmingham area and decided it was time to start training full time.  Once I committed to it God took care of the rest.

Considering personal training? Here’s why you should…Most people that do not succeed or stick with a workout regiment is because of the lack of accountability and support.  Working with a trainer provides that and the knowledge you need to meet your goals.

A healthy lifestyle and fitness is important, but also fun for you. How do you keep it fresh and exciting?  I once had another trainer ask me what I do for fun, after thinking about it all I really could come up with was exercising…  To me fitness most often takes place outside the gym. It is something I have learned to incorporate into every aspect of my life. I’m always willing to try new things and workouts.  I am very blessed to have a group of friends that are always willing to love, support and workout together.  Whether it going for a group hike, kickboxing or even trying out a new class at other facilities, we do it together.

Fill in the blank: The key to losing weight and getting fit is 20% Workout and 80% Diet.

It’s all about balance; tell us how you maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen to stay fit… I understand that for a lot of people finding balance is hard to do. I’ve made healthy eating and exercise a priority in my life, not just an afterthought like most people.  It’s not a matter of if I can fit it into my day but when? Workouts are a standing appointment on my schedule. If for some reason my day gets crazy and I miss a workout then I don’t beat myself up about it.  Tomorrow is a new day and a new workout.

How many times per week do you recommend training? And for how long? For most people I recommend working with a training 2-3 times a week for at least an hour.

Why can’t I just do cardio? If your only goal is to lose weight then you can only do cardio but if you truly want to transform your body then there must be some type of strength training included in your routine.

What are some easy changes you recommend clients make with diet? Start by eating more at home, it’s the only way to be in control of what is going into your body.  Second I recommend that you cut out the processed foods and concentrate on eating more whole fresh foods.  It’s just as easy to grab an apple and nuts when walking out the door as it is to pick up a bag of chips and candy bar.  Another great tip I suggest to my clients is to take a few mins at night before bed to think about what your day will be like tomorrow and what you are going to eat. You are less likely to run by a drive through if you have a plan. It’s all about choices and control.

When training clients, what do you recommend they eat before and after workout?  A piece of fruit such as an apple or banana with a serving of nuts or nut butter.

Do you specialize in any training styles?  I have a diversified group of clients at Revolve so trying to fit them all into the same box is not what best serves them.  I specialize in a “whole Shelf” method of training. 90% of the people I train have other issues that need to be address besides just needing to lose weight.  I help clients address and overcome those issues so they can succeed and be happy in every area of life. As far as the physical training I create a program for each client based on different factors including current physical condition, age, stress threshold, and most importantly, the client’s goals.

What type of training do you offer at Revolve? One-on-one and group training is available. I even train husbands and wives together as long as they sign a waiver promising they will not kill each other in the process.

What sets you apart from other trainers?  More than anything I would say it is my love for and faith in Christ.  When you have a true love for Christ then it can’t help but to overflow to my clients.

I hear you’re quite the cook with protein powders. What kind of things have you learned to make with protein powder? Are you willing to share any of your secret recipes our readers? I enjoy trying out new ways to cook with protein powder. A few of my favorites would be sweet potato protein pancakes, apple pie protein packed yogurt and of course I make some out of this world protein shakes.   If I have to pick just one I would say that the Pine Apple Whip is my favorite.  It is delicious and very easy to make.

1.5 cups of frozen pineapple

½ frozen banana

1 scoop of your favorite vanilla protein powder

¼ cup of coconut water

Take pineapple and banana out of freezer and let thaw for about 15 mins.  Then combine all ingredients into blender and blend until smooth.

What has been the best part of owning Revolve?  I met my husband at Revolve, it just doesn’t get any better than that.

Tell us something not many people know about you?

In July I had a mole removed that was stage 1 melanoma.  I went in for my annual skin cancer screening and next think I know I’m having cancer removed.  I have always been one of those people that had the mindset that something like that would never happen to me.  It has been a real eye opener.  I now encourage everyone I know to be faithful on all annual checkups including the dermatologist.

Mantra:  I service God best by serving others.
