Be Curious!

A Year of Living Glamorously

Challenge: Go Back to School

Learn or Refresh a New Skill, Take Up a Hobby

Aren’t you curious? Just a little bit? Oh, come on, I know you are.You are living glamorously, and that means that you are living each day in wide–eyed wonder at the world. I consider myself to be a lifelong learner and believe that we are all students of life. When you look around and consider all that there is to learn about, and to learn how to do, and to know, doesn’t it make you want to find out more? A healthy approach to life involves keeping our sense of curiosity intact and keeping our minds sharp. Studies have shown that one way to remain active and healthy as we age is to exercise our brains. Keeping mentally fit is just as important for our overall health and quality of life as being physically fit. Challenging ourselves and keeping our brains stimulated is very important to our overall well–being and enjoyment of life.

A healthy dose of curiosity is the perfect antidote to feeling bored or stagnant, or feeling just a little less than excited about the way things are going. All of these feelings suck the glamour out of the day, by the way. Cultivate an insatiable appetite for learning, and you will always have something new and interesting to do.

Something about this time of year always makes me feel a little more inquisitive, ready for a new challenge. I guess it’s left over from the days of starting back to school. Our minds are ready to engage again, after taking a summer siesta, and take on new challenges like learning a new skill, or researching a new interest. The possibilities for feeding our curiosity are endless. Even though you may no longer be of school age, it is never too late to learn something new. In fact, learning is an ongoing, life–long process, not something we stop doing once we finish our formal schooling.

Now is the perfect time to enroll in that class that you have always wanted to join, to sign up for that lesson that you have been thinking about taking, drop in on a lecture about a topic that interests you, or pick up that hobby you set aside years ago. Whatever interests you may have, there is probably a class, a group, an outlet of some kind offered somewhere near where you live. And there are always endless options online.

Never in life should anyone ever say they are bored! How could you be? Be a little curious, just enough to want to find out a little bit more. That’s all it takes, and before you know it, you have become more knowledgeable about a subject, met some interesting people, or entered into a whole new world. You just never know where the road of curiosity might lead you.

Curiosity opens up the mind to every possibility, so there should be no chance for your life to become stuck in a rut. So, that’s the challenge this month, be a little curious and learn about something, even if it’s just something in which you are only slightly interested. Just engage your mind and challenge yourself. You will be amazed at how much more interesting life will suddenly become. And, don’t worry about that cat, he has nine lives. And I am sure they are made much more glamorous by being curious!•
