Brava Rotisserie Grill: A Taste of the Spanish Seaside

Much like the Spanish coast for which it is named, Brava has something for everyone, while appealing to those who are looking for something extraordinary

Owners Barry and Lanier O’Hare developed a menu and restaurant reflecting the essence of this Mediterranean culture. There is no butter in the building. Fresh and seasonal ingredients, including many local products, are used in made-from-scratch meals, served at reasonable prices. And the results are pure perfection.

The Place

Brava Rotisserie Grill is located at 5184 Caldwell Mill Road, Suite 205, in Hoover. You order at the counter, and your meal is served in the bright and cheery dining room with attentive and friendly service. This corner space in Valleydale Village also makes a convenient spot to pick up take–out. And with family style (for four people) dinners to go at a price of $19.99, it is not surprising that take–out accounts for approximately one third of the restaurant’s business.

The People

The O’Hares developed the concept after visiting family on the Costa Brava of Spain. They fell in love with the restaurants on the beach, which served quick, healthy, and leisurely meals. Their son, Dillon works in the restaurant during his summers off as a student at The University of Alabama.

The menu is divided among Main Courses, Salads, Soups, Sandwiches, Sides, Brava Combos, Brava Kids, Family To Go, and Desserts. There is also a wine and beer list, from which we select Spanish Enanzo Chardonnay. The wine makes a light and refreshing pairing to our lunch on this hot, summer day.

As an appetizer we order House Made Chips. The thick, crisp chips arrive with a delicious pink, sweet–plus–heat Brava Sauce and a tasty, garlic, white Costa Sauce for dipping. Next we split the special of the day, Paella, as a second course. Scrumptious golden rice envelops tender strips of rotisserie chicken, dried sausage and small, succulent shrimp and is served with fresh pita bread.

Salad courses include Caesar and today’s special of Garbanzo Bean. Crisp hearts of romaine, crunchy, house–made croutons, tasty Parmesan cheese and creamy Caesar dressing are tossed and balanced in this terrific Caesar Salad. And the Garbanzo beans and wilted spinach make for a rich, warm salad with a touch of heat.

Rotisserie Chicken

Main dishes of Rotisserie Pork Loin and Rotisserie Chicken (white meat) are accompanied by our choice of sides: Med (Mediterranean fries) and today’s grilled Seasoned Vegetables of squash and zucchini. The pork arrives sliced and tender. The chicken is golden on the outside, white and moist on the inside. Both are outstanding. The delicate fries are thin sliced and are lightly tossed with a scrumptious Manchego cheese. And the grilled to perfection veggies are in season and full of flavor.

Rotisserie Pork Loin

A delectable dessert of Churros, Spanish donuts, completes our meal at Brava Rotisserie Grill. Three warm, rectangular pastries are tossed in cinnamon sugar and drizzled with a chocolate glaze. After all, I did read that chocolate has health benefits and to have a little each day. •
