Ruby Slipper in Homewood serves comfort food at its finest. Many people love nothing more than a great brunch, and Ruby Slipper the new breakfast, lunch, brunch oriented restaurant in Homewood is just the ticket if the first meal of the day is your forte.

Misse Caves is the general manager at the restaurant, which has been packed since its opening last month.

“We want everyone to just come as you are. We’re not pretentious in any way. It’s so nice to just have a place to come and have that sense of community and hang out and just relax,” Caves says.

The Ruby Slipper in Homewood is the fourteenth restaurant in the chain, with new ones about to open in Chattanooga and Charlotte.

The Ruby Slipper Cafe was founded in May 2008, after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Mid-City, New Orleans neighborhood. In recovery from that life-changing storm, husband and wife Erich and Jennifer Weishaupt found an opportunity to turn a blighted corner store into a vibrant gathering place where neighbors could enjoy excellent breakfast, lunch and brunch fare in a casual and inviting atmosphere. The Ruby Slipper Cafe Mid-City was an instant success due to its inviting nature, innovative brunch and morning cocktail selections.

The menu features a New Orleans–   inspired mix of breakfast staples and morning cocktails, using locally-sourced ingredients. Among items are BBQ shrimp & grits, eggs cochon benedict and bananas foster pain perdu, and drinks like the Brandy Milk Punch, Morning Margarita, mimosas and bloody marys.

The restaurant frequently runs specials, often tied to the culinary tastes of their individual markets. Here are a few examples.

Sausage Gravy Benedict: Grilled pork sausage links and poached eggs are served atop biscuits, and finished with saw-mill style sausage gravy

Nutella and Raspberry Stuffed French Toast: The brioche bread is French Toast-battered and crispy. And it’s stuffed with Nutella whipped cream cheese paired with a raspberry coulis, topped with vanilla almond granola and powdered sugar. The dish is served with your choice of breakfast meat.

Creme Brulee Pancake: Two buttermilk pancakes topped with creme brulee custard, brulleed sugar and strawberries

Hello, Sunshine Cocktail: Gin, Natalie’s Grapefruit juice and rosemary simple syrup.

The experience at Ruby Slipper is a great start to any day. •
