Octane is a roaster and café that serves hand-brewed coffees, artisan espresso drinks, and craft cocktails, as well as house-made pastries, breakfast, and desserts.

I dropped by for a cocktail and found both classics and surprises on the cocktail menu. I opted for a classic “official cocktail.” The Old Fashioned is an International Bartenders Association Official Cocktail in its annual World Cocktail Competition.

Traditionally an Old Fashioned is made by muddling sugar with bitters, adding alcohol—typically whiskey or brandy—and a twist of citrus rind. It is served in its namesake glass—a short, round, eight-to-12-ounce glass—called an Old Fashioned.

Octane’s Old Fashioned is the perfect cocktail for a cold, winter night. The bartender stirs a Rittenhouse Bonded Rye, Demerara sugar, their own coffee-pecan bitters, Angostura, and lemon peel. The cocktail is golden brown in color, with seductive aromatics and deep, rich flavors. And with no ice added, there is nothing diluting my cocktail, allowing me time to contemplate as I nurse my drink.
