Date Night: PaperDoll

Elegant and comfortable

Joel Cheatwood and Jason Koenig are partners in the new bar Paper Doll on 1st Avenue North. A night at Paper Doll can include young professionals, parents on a night out, girlfriends meeting for drinks, a business meeting. The name is an homage to an owner’s very dear late grandmother. Her favorite song was “Paper Doll” by the Mills Brothers.

“We wanted to create an environment that was as refined as the craft cocktail program at Paper Doll. One of our goals was to create a space that was simultaneously elegant and comfortable. And, while Paper Doll is very much a downtown Birmingham bar, we also wanted our guests to feel like they were being transported anywhere in the world. When you walk through the doors of Paper Doll, you immediately feel like you’re in a really chic lounge in a major metropolitan city. We worked with Andrew Brown Interiors to create the space, and he and his team did an amazing job executing our vision and bringing it to fruition. Another important aspect of the design is that we wanted to feature local artists. We have paintings from William McClure. We have fabrics from Heather Chadduck Textiles. And Lindsey J. Porter did the illustrations in the menu,” Koenig says.

Co-owner Jason Koenig

Cheatwood and Koenig like to think of their place as a melting pot of cultures and demographics. They want Paper Doll to be a space that’s welcoming to all. “When we travel, we always seek out the places that are building strong reputations and making waves in the craft cocktail world. We want Paper Doll to be on the map of the country’s best, and most respected bars. I think we’re moving in that direction,” Koenig says.

Signature Drinks

“Our Paper Doll Old Fashioned is the best in town,” Cheatwood says. “At Happy Hour (Monday through Friday from 4-7 p.m.), it’s only $5.” The Basil Smash is also a crowd favorite. Fresh muddled basil and our house-made cucumber syrup are the central ingredients in this refreshing cocktail. And, the Thank You for Smoking is becoming a standout on the menu. “We smoke the glass with wood chips before pouring in the bourbon-based cocktail so that the smoke becomes a defining flavor. Our talented bartenders have helped us create a truly amazing cocktail program,” he says.
