Editorial photo shoots are probably my favorite thing to do. It’s one of the only times I get to create something with no limitations. When I work with clients, I’m always amplifying their styles to realize their visions. But for a styled shoot, I am able to let my imagination run free. In all of my designs, I like to juxtapose contrasting elements—old and new, dark and light. When I envision a real bride who would get married at Iron City, I think of her as a sexy girl with an edge. I wanted to create something modern and clean, but make it lush and luxurious. I used thousands of red roses when designing the floral pieces. To give a velvety base for the couple to say, “I do,” I covered the entire stage in rose petals that spilled down sides of the staircase. For shoots like this, when I have the time to do floral work myself, I love letting my hands move to create exactly what my mind envisions. I selected a gorgeous Jenny Packham gown for our bride that showed a little skin. Again, it’s all about contrast—sweet and sexy. From the table linens to the stationery, the cake to the cocktails, everything told a vivid color story. It’s a dark venue, so it needs a punch of color to bring the space to life. One of my favorite visual elements was the liquid metal draping, which served as a highly reflective base for the suspended wall of lights. The drama and depth the draping provided was integral to give visual interest to the room. The key to great event design is a solid vision that leaves some room for interpretation. Events are a collaborative effort, and when you have a team that understands the vision and lends their talents, your only limitations are what you can dream.
