Newman’s Own Wines are enjoyable and affordable.

It has been 59 years since Paul Newman appeared in his first Hollywood film, The Silver Chalice. The film was a failure. It has been more than 25 years since Paul Newman made his first salad dressing, which was an immediate success. And it has been almost five years since his death. Yet Newman’s legacy for helping others is alive and well at Newman’s Own Foundation. And his products are thriving.

Newman mixed his dressings as a hobby in his basement for friends and neighbors. It was packaged in old wine bottles with parchment labels. Followed by the successful product launch of Newman’s Own Dressings came pasta sauces, popcorn, salsa, pizza, a line of organic foods and finally — wine. “Wine was the only thing missing at dinner time — now the meal is complete,” Paul Newman said in early 2008. Sourced from premiere California vineyards, the wines pair well with his salad dressings and pasta sauces.

Newman’s Own wines are both enjoyable and affordable, retailing for $9.99 each, making them a great pairing option for weeknight dinners at home — or everyday sipping. Newnan’s Own Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 is a big, robust red. Blended with 10 percent Petite Sirah, this well structured wine offers notes of vanilla, black cherries and toast. Newman’s Own Merlot 2010 is smooth and velvety with hints of ripe berry and oak. If you find Pinots too light in body, try Newman’s Own Pinto Noir 2010. It is medium in body, with a backbone of 18 percent Syrah and two-percent Petite Sirah. It boasts Bing cherry and toasty oak flavors and a long finish. And Newman’s Own Chardonnay 2010 is a full, lush wine with tropical citrus, pear, and pineapple flavors and an underlying essence of sweet vanilla oak with nice acidity.

Through the years Paul Newman has donated every cent he earned from his Newman’s Own products to charity — more than $300 million since 1982. Today Newman’s Own Foundation continues to donate all net royalties and profits, after taxes, from the sale of Newman’s Own products to charities worldwide with a focus on children with life limiting conditions, empowering human rights, hunger and nutrition. Make Newman’s wines your own, enjoy the wine, and help others.•
