Heart of the City: The Kress Building

Explore the businesses that are helping to lead the renaissance of Birmingham’s city center.

This classic building combines history and spectacular space for a perfect downtown event venue.

Start with the 360-degree spectacular views from the classic rooftop. Mix in the historic role the building played in the American Civil Rights Movement. Combine and you have the historic Kress Building, built in 1937 and located in the Theater District of Downtown Birmingham. The Kress is the city’s premier event space and a perfect downtown event venue. The building hosts weddings, receptions and a wide array of parties in a space that is so versatile it can easily be used to host an upscale black-tie affair one evening and a comfortable, casual party the next.  Whether a wedding reception, corporate gathering, or non-profit fundraiser, the Kress building rooftop is an amazing space for party-goers to gather.

The lobby of the Kress Building offers additional space for an event.  Essentially a blank canvas, planners bring their events to life by adding creative touches to the extraordinary Art Deco bones of the classic building.

Wiggins, Childs, Pantazis, Fisher, & Goldfarb is headquartered in the historic Kress Building, which was restored by the founding shareholders of the firm in 2003. The S.H.Kress Five-and-Ten Cent Store was a department store, building by incorporating Bauhaus, Streamline Moderne, and International Style influences.

At The Kress Building in the spring of 1963, activists launched one of the most influential campaigns of the Civil Rights Movement. The Kress Building is located at the intersection of many of the seminal events that occurred during that spring, which served as a major turning point in the Civil Rights Movement.
