Okay, I know I’m taking the easy way out saying this, but these donuts actually are “heavenly.” At least that’s the feeling you get when you eat any confectionary treat from The Heavenly Donut Co. It’s as if a choir of angels follows you to sing in harmony whenever you take a bite. Owned and operated by Kimberly and Brock Beiersdoerfer, this place has been serving up its delectable sweet concoctions since January 2013. So of course it was a pretty easy decision for me to shoot my third episode here.
Their best sellers are simply the glazed and chocolate glazed, but I really enjoyed a top non-traditional seller, the maple bacon donut. Yes, I said bacon. I mean come on, everything’s better with bacon! Plus, it doesn’t hurt that the maple flavored icing complements it so well. They offer so many variations that I decided to sample as many as I could. Needless to say, I probably gained quite a few pounds in the process, but it was all worth it. One other top seller that needs mention is the glorious apple fritter. It actually turned out to be one of my new favorite desserts. It’s a big ole gooey, apply pastry of deliciousness.
If my words and these images aren’t convincing enough, famed Food Network host and food critic Alton Brown has also given them some high praise. He claimed it was “out of this world” on his recent visit to the Birmingham area on tour and was especially partial to the old-fashioned. With more than 35 different flavors to choose from, there should be something there to tickle anyone’s taste buds. If you can’t make it to their physical location off of Cahaba River Road, they also have a food truck that travels all over Birmingham. Follow them on social media to find out more, and get ready for a “heavenly” experience.
