Like a Box of Chocolates

Life is good for chocolatier Kathy D’Agostino.

What do Unicorn Bark, Mikadzuki Matcha Bar, Milky Crater Crunch Bar, or Chocolatà’s Garden Gnomes all have in common? They are all creations of Kathy D’Agostino of Chocolatà, a designer chocolate shop in downtown Birmingham. During a time when we need more shopping in downtown, D’Agostino, who learned chocolate making as a young girl, has been creating new and delectable creations with chocolate from South America using fresh herbs and berries. A block away from the Pizitz Food Hall, her little shop has been turning out a nice selection of chocolate goodies from chocolate bars to ganaches to bonbons. D’Agostino says she has been surprised by the outpouring of affection for her shop downtown. “I love that I feel like a needed member of the community and that people have loved my recipes and creations,” she says. “We have only been open since September and the response has been great. I think it is because I really care about making great chocolate and to have a shop downtown, which makes it easy to stop by and get quick chocolate gifts as well as a treat for themselves.” I personally tried the Turtle, and it has subtle hints of rosemary that made it so very good. There are so many to choose from, and it’s nice just to walk in the door and smell all of the chocolate.
