Love Stories: Caroline and Luke

For Luke Holcomb, 32, and Caroline Stephens, 24, it doesn’t matter what plans their day holds, as long as it’s spent together. From the moment they first locked eyes, this couple’s love story has been growing, ultimately culminating in a picturesque proposal atop the highest peak in Alabama.

How did you two meet?

C: Luke and I first met when I visited a small group he was leading through our church. The first thing that caught my eye was, “Man, this guy is really cute… this is going to make it hard to concentrate!”

What was your most memorable date?

L:  For our second date, we went to see a Matthew Mayfield concert, and I still wasn’t sure how she felt about me. She left to go to the restroom, and a few minutes later she returned without me knowing. As she walked up, she softly touched the lower part of my back. Immediately, I stood up straight and thought, “Oh, she does like me!”

What is your favorite thing about your partner?

C: I love his laugh. No matter what, if he starts laughing, I can’t control myself—it’s contagious.

L: Her smile. She’s always had a very genuine, yet unique smile, as evidenced from all the childhood pictures that her family has shown me of her. It’s so pure and so joyous.

Tell us about the proposal.

L: I planned the proposal in a way that she wouldn’t expect, at a time that she wouldn’t expect, and in a location that had an overwhelming presence: Bald Rock on Mount Cheaha, the highest point in the state of Alabama.

C: Luke skillfully planned a day of hiking—something I love to do—just for us to spend some time together. When we got out to the rock, he told me to look around for some pretty areas so that we could take some pictures while he got his camera. Next thing I knew, I turned around and he was down on one knee with a ring box open.

L: She was completely surprised—so much that I had to ask her the question twice!

What was your experience like shopping for the ring at Diamonds Direct?

C: I loved it. Luke and I went separately, so when I went to look, my sister Jennifer went with me. We worked with Charlie, who gave me a different perspective about ring shopping. He encouraged me to not just look at the engagement ring alone, but instead look at it with a band since I will be wearing the set much longer than I will just be wearing the engagement ring.

Which part of your upcoming wedding are you most excited about?

C: I am most excited about the part where I get to say my vows to Luke, where I get to commit myself to him and him only, and where I get to promise to love him through the rest of our lives with our closest family and friends supporting us.

L:  Definitely the reception. We’re having many of our extended family and friends together for the first time, and we’re excited about everyone being able to share in our big day with good food, music, and fun!

Now that you’ve found “the one,” what advice would you give to someone else about love?

C: Don’t be anxious. As a girl, it’s easy to get caught up in the world of “I want that,” but if you are patient and just let love happen, I can promise you it will be so much better than you ever dreamed possible.

L:  Never settle for less than you deserve, no matter how long it takes to find that person. The day that you decide to settle may be the day before you meet the person you’re destined to spend the rest of your life with.
