It all started one rainy evening, when Kate Motte, 23, met future husband Hunter, 24, and their love story began. Now a combat medic in the U.S. military, Hunter is currently deployed to Afghanistan. The two have tied the knot and cannot wait to celebrate their nupitals with friends and family when Hunter returns. In the meantime, they’re reminiscing on how they first fell in love, even though they’re miles away.

How did you two meet?
Kate: My friend and I had decided we wanted to go out for some drinks one night, and we were waiting in line in the rain when he walked up to us and said “follow me.” I slipped him my number on a napkin and said, “Here’s my number in case you want to check on me later.”
Hunter: I thought she was beautiful, well dressed, and classy. I was working as a bouncer at the bar when I saw her standing outside in the rain. So, I took it upon myself to help her and her friend.
What has been your favorite date?
Kate: Our first date when he took me to Bottega. It was the nicest restaurant I had ever been to—so nice that I didn’t know what anything on the menu was! We sat there and talked for 4 ½ hours and have been together ever since.
Hunter: Energetic. Ditsy. Wonderful.
Kate: Funny. Smart. Protective.
What is your favorite thing about each other?
Hunter: The way she jokes—I love how we have the same sense of humor about everything.
Kate: Yes, I think that we have a sense of humor that only we could understand!
When did you realize you had met “the one”?
Hunter: I can’t say there was ever an exact moment I could pinpoint; things always just worked very well as our relationship progressed. Now, I look at her, and my heart lifts the burden of my day. I know I have my life partner.
Tell us about the proposal.
Kate: I thought we were going on a normal date…boy, was I wrong! He had talked to the owner of Bottega and had us sit at the same table where we had our first date. We were eating dinner when I heard his chair push out, and my heart started racing. He proposed, and with tears streaming down my face, I said “yes!” I never took the ring, though—he reminded me of that because instead of looking at the ring, I was looking at him.
Hunter: I wanted to build something that speaks to the way I feel about her. I wanted the braiding to hold up the diamond like a cradle to show how I hold her in my heart.
What are you most looking forward to about spending the rest of your lives together?
Kate: The memories we’ll make and getting to spend every important moment with him. He’s all I think about all of the time.
