Heather WilsonPatient Spotlight: Heather and Michael Wilson

December 21, 2015 | View on Facebook

Husband and wife Michael and Heather Wilson love traveling and spending weekends on the lake—and since they both got LASIK surgery, doing the things they love have become much easier. We’re chatting with Heather about the couple’s decision for both of them get vision correction surgery.

“I had been wearing glasses and contacts since the age of nine years old,” says Heather. “I had been told for years that I was not a good candidate for LASIK because of my astigmatism.”

However, when husband Michael, a tooling engineer, decided glasses were too cumbersome for his line of work and went in for a LASIK consultation at Michelson Laser Vision, Heather went along with him.

“I was with my husband throughout his procedure with Dr. Michelson,” says Heather. “I decided then that I would go through the exam process and let Dr. Michelson tell me whether or not I would be a good candidate for LASIK.”

Unlike the eye doctors Heather had visited before, Dr. Michelson assured Heather that she could, in fact, receive LASIK surgery. Dr. Michelson is the only doctor in the state of Alabama with access to the fastest vision surgery platform (WaveLight EX500 Excimer), so he is able to provide patients with unmatched state-of-the-art technology and care.

“What sets Dr. Michelson apart from other doctors is his willingness to listen to you and let you know what the procedure will entail step by step,” says Heather. “Dr. Michelson and his staff were so informative about what to expect with every aspect.”

Now that both have had their vision restored by Dr. Michelson, Heather and Michael are free to work and play without the restrictions of contacts or glasses.

“When summer comes, I will be able to get up in the mornings when we are on the boat and not have to put contacts in to be able to go swimming,” says Heather, smiling. “I can just jump right in the water.”

Elizabeth Koury 4Patient Spotlight: Elizabeth Koury

December 14, 2015 | View on Facebook

“As soon as I sat up from the procedure, I could see clearer than I ever had with contacts or glasses,” says local college student Elizabeth Koury on getting LASIK surgery last month. “I love the freedom of being able to wake up each morning with no blurriness or double vision.”

As a lifelong glasses wearer—suffering from both nearsightedness and astigmatism since age three—Koury had been considering having her vision corrected by LASIK for some time.

“I spend the majority of my day looking at computer screens for both work and school, which caused eye strain and headaches,” she explains. With her college graduation coming up in May, Koury didn’t want glasses to be a part of her post-grad life.

Koury’s ophthalmologist referred her to Dr. Marc Michelson, whose practice Michelson Laser Vision, Inc. stands at the forefront of vision correction surgery in the state of Alabama. Located at UAB Highlands Hospital, Michelson Laser Vision uses the fastest machine in the country to perform bladeless LASIK surgery.

Elizabeth Koury 5“What most impressed me during the consultation was Dr. Michelson’s stellar record and his dedication to using the most current technology to ensure the best results for his patients,” says Koury of her decision to choose Dr. Michelson for her surgery.

After just 15 minutes in the top-of-the-line operating room, Dr. Michelson had given Koury the clear vision she had long hoped for.

“The Michelson team made sure that I was comfortable every step of the way,” she says. “My vision continued to sharpen over the next week, and at my follow-up appointment, my vision was 20/15.”

Now, as she embarks on the next chapter in her life, Koury confidently steps forward without the worry of glasses or contacts. She is excitedly looking towards the future, and she’s doing so with clear vision.

Patient Spotlight: Andy Wallace

November 23, 2015 | View on Facebook

“A few summers ago, I was a counselor at a cancer camp for kids and wore my eyeglasses all week,” says Andy Wallace, a Birmingham native who works at UAB – The University of Alabama at Birmingham. “I was playing ball with some of the kids and got hit in the face, and my glasses broke. The rest of the week was spent with a pair of cracked and taped spectacles.”

Wallace explains that it was that moment when he decided it was time for his lifelong journey with glasses and contacts to come to an end. As an active guy who enjoys the outdoors, his poor vision was really slowing him down.

“Several years ago when I first read about LASIK, I got really excited about it, but my ophthalmologist at the time somehow convinced me that it wasn’t the right choice for me,” he explains. Years later, his interest in LASIK peaked again, but this time he turned to Dr. Marc Michelson at Michelson Laser Vision, Inc., who assured Wallace that he was a perfect candidate for surgery.

As the state’s leader in vision correction surgery, Dr. Michelson is the only ophthalmologist in Alabama with access to the fastest machine in the country that perform bladeless LASIK surgery. It’s called the Wavelight EX500, and it allows Dr. Michelson to provide the latest and most sophisticated technology in laser vision correction in Alabama.

“What was incredible was the short time the surgery took,” says Wallace of his LASIK experience. “I saw immediate results when I stood up and looked out Dr. Michelson’s window—I could see downtown Birmingham from his office at UAB Highlands!”

Now, whether Wallace is planning an event for UAB alumni or hanging out at home with his spouse, Martin, and their three pets, he is no longer limited by his vision.

“I would definitely recommend Dr. Michelson to anyone considering LASIK surgery,” he says. “This surgery has changed my life.”

“I had LASIK surgery one year ago, and not a day goes by that I am not grateful for my new vision,” says Mona Ponder, a registered nurse and mom of two in Homewood. “It is the best surgery I could ever have because it’ll last me a lifetime.”

Ponder explains that before LASIK, she didn’t feel like herself wearing glasses; plus, the struggle with dry, itchy eyes made for a daily battle with poor vision and its side effects.

“I know a few friends who went to Dr. Marc Michelson for LASIK and highly recommended him,” she says. “Since I’ve had the surgery, I have told almost everyone I know how amazing LASIK is and how it has dramatically improved my life.”

Since then, he has been nationally renowned for his expert knowledge and cutting-edge vision restoring technology.

“I told Dr. Michelson that his new slogan should be ‘Dr. Michelson: Miracle Maker’,” says Ponder, smiling. She explains that her “miracle moment” happened the day after her surgery when she went to Dr. Michelson for a post-op checkup.

“My husband was driving me to Michelson Laser Vision, and I commented to him that I could see all of the individual bricks on the buildings we were passing. At my checkup, Dr. Michelson told me my vision was 20/15—better than perfect!”

Mona 3For someone who has dealt with poor vision her whole life, the gift of sight can truly feel life changing. Whether making rounds at the hospital or volunteering at her daughters’ schools, Ponder now sees what a difference LASIK has made for her.

“It’s so wonderful to not have to fool with contacts, solutions, drops, and glasses, but that’s only a small part,” she says. “The best part is how crystal clear the world is around me. I notice many more details than I ever have.”

For people who have always suffered from poor vision, the gift of sight can truly be life changing. Paige Wilcutt, an accountant and mom living in Homewood, became so reliant on wearing contact lenses that she couldn’t do anything without them.

“I always wanted LASIK surgery, but my eyes were so bad, I could not have it done,” she explains. After being turned away from doctors, Wilcutt had given up on vision correction surgery. That is, until she went in for a routine eye appointment with her optometrist.

“My doctor said if I ever had LASIK to use Dr. Marc Michelson,” she says. “He told me Dr. Michelson is the best and most knowledgeable, so I felt confident with his high recommendation.”

Wilcutt booked her consultation with Dr. Michelson at Michelson Laser Vision, Inc., and was thrilled to find out she was, in fact, a candidate for vision correction surgery. Because Dr. Michelson is the only eye doctor in the state of Alabama that utilizes the Wavelight EX500—the fastest FDA-approved excimer laser surgery platform in the country—in conjunction with the Ziemer Femrosecond laser to perform LASIK, he is able to provide his patient’s with unmatched world-class care.

Wilcutt explains that her experience getting LASIK was quick and easy; sitting up after surgery with clear vision was a moment she will never forget. “Before, I could not see anything in the surgery room but fuzzy shapes,” she says. “Immediately after, I could read the words on a sign on the wall across the room!”

Paige 5 largeAs someone who never thought she’d live her daily life without depending on contact lenses, Wilcutt considers her clear vision a true gift from Dr. Michelson.

“To say LASIK was life changing does not even do it justice,” says Wilcutt. “I can see the clock when I wake up, I can get knocked over by an ocean wave at the beach, and I can really rub my eyes if I need to—all without contacts.”

Alan Aycock 1Patient Spotlight: Alan Aycock

October 12, 2015 | View on Facebook

When you’ve worn glasses or contacts your entire life, it’s easy to become dependent on them not just for vision, but for peace of mind. Alan Aycock, a purchasing agent who lives in Crestwood, became wary of travel for fear of losing a contact lens or breaking his glasses and not being able to drive home.

“Needless to say, my vision was a major liability,” Aycock says. “I finally decided to get LASIK surgery after a major push from my wife.”

After asking around friends and coworkers, Aycock was led to one doctor: Dr. Marc Michelson of Michelson Laser Vision, Inc. Located at UAB Highlands here in Birmingham, Dr. Michelson’s practice was established in 1999 to offer patients the best technology available to reduce or eliminate the need for corrective eyewear.

“You can tell just by talking with Dr. Michelson that he really enjoys his profession,” says Aycock. “As a joke, I asked him if I could call him on his mobile or home phone at any hour of the day or night if I had any problems post-surgery. Without falter, he said ‘Absolutely.’ When I heard that, I knew that I had the right doctor for the job.”

After LASIK, Aycock explains he can now make it to the kitchen in the middle of the night without tripping and can read his computer screen without squinting—little things he doesn’t take for granted when he has struggled with poor vision his whole life.

Alan Aycock 4“I would recommend Dr. Michelson not only for the service he provides, but for his staff as well,” says Aycock. “There are people who have been working with him for decades; that tells me that not only is he a good businessman, but he is also a good leader and friend to his coworkers.”

Dr. Michelson restored Alan Aycock’s vision–to find out if you’re a candidate for LASIK surgery, schedule a consultation with Dr. Michelson at Michelson Laser Vision Inc. by calling 205-969-8100 or visiting www.michelsonlaservision.com.
