Kevin Fichtner

January 19, 2015 | View on Facebook

“I have worn glasses or contacts for nearly 30 years,” says Kevin Fichtner, a photojournalist, husband, and father who lives in Auburn, AL. “I wanted to know what it felt like to wake up in the morning and be able to see my daughter’s face without having to use my glasses.”

One month ago, Fichtner met with LASIK eye surgeon Dr. Marc Michelson at Michelson Laser Vision, Inc. here in Birmingham, where he gained the clear vision he’s always wanted through Photorefractive Keratoplasty, more commonly known as PRK surgery.

“I now see more clearly than I did before the procedure,” says Fichtner. “Not to mention, I no longer have to wear glasses or contacts.”

Fichtner is among the thousands of local patients for whom Dr. Michelson has restored clear vision across his decades-long career.

In 1991, the first PRK surgery in the state of Alabama was performed by Dr. Michelson, a time well before any other doctor in the area. Since then, Dr. Michelson has challenged himself to consistently stay on the leading edge of laser vision correction.

Kevin Fichtner tennisNow, 24 years after that first PRK surgery, Dr. Michelson utilizes the fastest platform approved by the FDA in the U.S., the WaveLight EX500 Excimer. And since Dr. Michelson paves the way for vision correction in Alabama, it is not surprising to learn that he is the only doctor in the state who has access to this cutting-edge device.

“What sets Dr. Michelson apart from other doctors is that he has the latest technology,” explains Fichtner, who was referred to Dr. Michelson by his optometrist.

“The surgery itself was easy,” he continues. “It took about a week to be able to see clearly, and my vision is now 20/15 for the first time in my life–I never dreamed I would have vision that great.”

If you think it’s time to get the clear vision you deserve, call Michelson Laser Vision, Inc. at 205-969-8100 to find out if you are a candidate for vision correction surgery. Stay tuned next week as we share another incredible patient story as part of our ‪#‎MichelsonMondays‬ series.

“Your life will never be the same after LASIK,” says teacher Dana Perkins from Hoover, AL. “And Dr. Michelson and his team at Michelson Laser Vision, Inc. are the best at what they do.”

For Perkins, getting vision correction surgery was about more than clear vision–it was about getting her life back. A glasses wearer since the age of 8, Perkins suffered from an abnormal astigmatism that made wearing contacts difficult for her.

“Everything was always a little blurry,” she explains. “Because my eyes were always straining, I was starting to get migraines 2-3 times a week.”

When Perkins realized that LASIK was the clear solution to her vision problems, she began asking around to find Birmingham’s best doctor to perform the surgery.

“I talked to probably 20 people, and at least 18 said they went to Dr. Michelson,” says Perkins. “To me, he was the obvious choice.”

Dana Perkins weddingFor decades, Birmingham patients have turned to Dr. Marc Michelson as the state’s leader in LASIK. Bladeless LASIK eye surgery is the most common surgery he performs at Michelson Laser Vision, Inc. to correct near nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Perkins explains that her LASIK surgery took less than 15 minutes; she now has 20/15 vision, the clearest she has ever had in her life.

“I woke up the next morning and was able to drive myself to the follow-up appointment,” she says.

Now, this teacher feels that both her vision and her quality of life are restored to a level she never thought possible.

“Words cannot describe how wonderful life is now that I can see,” she says, smiling. “My headaches are gone, and I can see everything in full clarity. It is life changing.”

February 9, 2015 | View on Facebook

“The ability to see is a lifetime investment in yourself,” says Tyler Morgan, a senior at The The University of Alabama. “And that investment is reciprocated by Dr. Michelson and his staff.”

For Morgan, life is an adventure. With interests ranging from camping and water sports to traveling the globe, it didn’t take long for the student to realize that his longtime dependence on contacts and glasses was slowing down his adventurous spirit.

“My poor eyesight was inhibiting my active lifestyle,” he explains. “A majority of my hobbies are much less enjoyable when I have to constantly worry about my contacts falling out or my glasses breaking.”

Ready for a change, Morgan turned to Michelson Laser Vision, Inc. to learn more about the bladeless LASIK procedure that has propelled Dr. Marc Michelson to the cutting edge of eye surgery. Remarkably, Dr. Michelson was the first doctor in the state of Alabama to perform vision correction surgery more than 20 years ago.

“Perhaps the only thing more impressive than the fact that Dr. Michelson was the first to perform the surgery in Alabama is the fact that he is humble about it,” says Morgan.

Tyler Morgan with Dr. Michelson“No question was made to seem insignificant or inconsequential,” he continues, explaining his first consultation at Michelson Laser Vision, Inc. “Dr. Michelson could see how important this decision was for me, and he was understanding of my concerns.”

As for the surgery itself? Morgan says it was the easiest procedure he has undergone (“My roommate even got the entire thing on video!” he laughs). By the next day, Morgan had 20/15 vision and was ready to book his next adventure.

“Just a few days ago, I booked a month-long trip to Europe for graduation,” he shares. “I smiled when I realized that I can go camping without worrying about how I’m going to change my contacts or not break my glasses.”

LASIK surgery has given Morgan so much more than clear vision; it has given him a new, exhilarated lease on life.

Says Morgan, “So many concerns have melted away–and so many promising adventures have appeared–simply because I can see all on my own.”

Cassie Smith 1PATIENT SPOTLIGHT

“When I first started wearing glasses back in the 80s, I needed really thick lenses and frames– not an attractive look,” laughs Cassie Smith, an assistant professor of English at The University of Alabama “I always felt like glasses hid my face, even after lenses got thinner over the years.”

For Smith, her poor eyesight had become a hindrance in her life. Between cumbersome glasses and contacts that dried her eyes out, weak vision was an inconvenience that Smith was ready to eliminate. Though she had feared eye surgery for years, she decided to take a big step and book a consultation for LASIK surgery with Dr. Michelson at Michelson Laser Vision, Inc.

“I decided to get LASIK with Dr. Michelson because of his years of experience and because he made an effort to know me as a person, not just a patient,” says Smith. “We talked about my job and Alabama football, plus he assuaged my anxieties about surgery.”

After that first consultation, getting vision correction surgery became a simple decision for Smith. She, like the many patients before her, felt certain she would be receiving top-notch care from Michelson’s team. Since opening Michelson Laser Vision, Inc. in 1999, Dr. Marc Michelson has provided world class care and astounding results to local patients like Smith.

“I was surprised by how simple the whole process of surgery was,” says Smith, despite her initial fear of surgery. “It was painless, and the results were instant.”

Cassie Smith 4“Now, I don’t have to stand in front of the mirror to put in contacts or pluck them out,” she continues, smiling. “When I play basketball with my nieces and nephews, I don’t have to worry about my glasses falling off and breaking. When I’m driving, I have better visibility. And I can’t underestimate the joy of waking up and being able to see the bedside clock, which I couldn’t do before.”

Nearly one year after getting LASIK surgery, Smith feels more like herself than ever before; she feels a renewed joy for life, and others are taking notice.

“My life has improved in terms of convenience,” she shares. “In fact, I recommended Dr. Michelson to my brother, who is planning to have his surgery in May.”

Todd Mason

March 6, 2015 | View on Facebook

“My professional and personal life has improved tremendously since having LASIK,” says Todd Mason, a husband and father who lives in Warrior, AL. As the owner of T and B Fence Company, Mason’s job takes him outdoors most of the time. For this working dad, this meant constantly switching between glasses and prescription sunglasses.

With the inconvenience of glasses and contact lenses interfering with everyday activities both during the work week and on the weekend–Mason coaches his son’s baseball team—he decided it was time to bring ease to his life and get laser vision correction surgery.

“I chose Dr. Michelson for my surgery because he is a well-known and trusted eye surgeon,” explains Mason, who received numerous referrals for Dr. Michelson from friends who had also had surgery from him. “His experience sets him apart from other doctors.”

Dr. Marc Michelson is a LASIK eye surgeon at Michelson Laser Vision, Inc., which recently relocated to UAB Highlands on the medical campus of UAB – The University of Alabama at Birmingham. For his laser vision correction surgeries, Dr. Michelson utilizes the WaveLight EX500 Excimer Laser, which is the fastest laser platform approved by the FDA in the U.S. It is the only EX500 laser in the state of Alabama and performs extremely fast surgeries with precise outcomes.

“My surgery was a quick and easy process,” says Mason, who explains that his entire surgery took just nine minutes to do both eyes. “The recovery was just as easy and the results were immediate. I could see well enough to leave the office immediately after surgery.”

Todd Mason 5Now, Mason can’t imagine his life without LASIK, and he wonders why he waited as long as he did to finally get this life-benefiting surgery.

“I no longer have to carry two sets of glasses everywhere I go,” he chuckles. “I can look a customer in the eye without my prescription sunglasses on and still see their face.”

As for coaching his son’s baseball team, clear vision couldn’t be more convenient. “Not having to change from sunglasses to prescription glasses and back again every time the sun goes behind a cloud at the ballpark is worth the surgery to me,” he says.

Evon Vest 1PATIENT SPOTLIGHT

Evon Vest

May 11, 2015 | View on Facebook

“I wore contact lenses for over three decades,” says Evon Vest, a registered nurse who lives in Oxford, AL with her husband. “So, I set a goal to have LASIK surgery by the time I turned 45 years old.”

However, Vest explains, her combination of astigmatism and farsightedness resulted in eye doctors telling her she was not a candidate for LASIK surgery. Vest had resigned to wearing contact lenses forever until a friend told her of his recent vision correction surgery with Marc Michelson, M.D. at Michelson Laser Vision, Inc.

“We had the same vision problems,” says Vest. “I told my husband that if Dr. Michelson can correct our friend’s vision, then surely he can correct mine.”

Since 1991, Dr. Michelson has restored the vision of many Alabama patients who thought they had to settle for living with their poor vision. Located at UAB Highlands, Dr. Michelson has corrected nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism in thousands of patients over the past 24 years.

As for Vest, it only took a few minutes before her decades of living with poor vision were corrected.

“I believe my surgery took less than 5 minutes,” says Vest. “My husband and daughter stood outside the window and watched it take place on a TV monitor.”

Evon Vest 3Now, this busy nurse sees life with restored vision and recommends to anyone else suffering from poor eyesight to consider LASIK for themselves.

“I have found LASIK to be more cost-effective in the long run,” Vest explains. “The accumulative costs of contacts and cleaners in the past 30 years surpasses the cost of my surgery.”

When you’ve worn glasses or contacts your entire life, it’s easy to become dependent on them not just for vision, but for peace of mind. Alan Aycock, a purchasing agent who lives in Crestwood, became wary of travel for fear of losing a contact lens or breaking his glasses and not being able to drive home.

“You can tell just by talking with Dr. Michelson that he really enjoys his profession,” says Aycock. “As a joke, I asked him if I could call him on his mobile or home phone at any hour of the day or night if I had any problems post-surgery. Without falter, he said ‘Absolutely.’ When I heard that, I knew that I had the right doctor for the job.”

Alan Aycock 4After LASIK, Aycock explains he can now make it to the kitchen in the middle of the night without tripping and can read his computer screen without squinting—little things he doesn’t take for granted when he has struggled with poor vision his whole life.

“I would recommend Dr. Michelson not only for the service he provides, but for his staff as well,” says Aycock. “There are people who have been working with him for decades; that tells me that not only is he a good businessman, but he is also a good leader and friend to his coworkers.”

“I always wanted LASIK surgery, but my eyes were so bad, I could not have it done,” she explains. After being turned away from doctors, Wilcutt had given up on vision correction surgery. That is, until she went in for a routine eye appointment with her optometrist.

“My doctor said if I ever had LASIK to use Dr. Marc Michelson,” she says. “He told me Dr. Michelson is the best and most knowledgeable, so I felt confident with his high recommendation.”

Wilcutt booked her consultation with Dr. Michelson at Michelson Laser Vision, Inc., and was thrilled to find out she was, in fact, a candidate for vision correction surgery. Because Dr. Michelson is the only eye doctor in the state of Alabama that utilizes the Wavelight EX500—the fastest FDA-approved excimer laser surgery platform in the country—in conjunction with the Ziemer Femrosecond laser to perform LASIK, he is able to provide his patient’s with unmatched world-class care.

Wilcutt explains that her experience getting LASIK was quick and easy; sitting up after surgery with clear vision was a moment she will never forget. “Before, I could not see anything in the surgery room but fuzzy shapes,” she says. “Immediately after, I could read the words on a sign on the wall across the room!”

Paige 5 largeAs someone who never thought she’d live her daily life without depending on contact lenses, Wilcutt considers her clear vision a true gift from Dr. Michelson.

“To say LASIK was life changing does not even do it justice,” says Wilcutt. “I can see the clock when I wake up, I can get knocked over by an ocean wave at the beach, and I can really rub my eyes if I need to—all without contacts.”

“A few summers ago, I was a counselor at a cancer camp for kids and wore my eyeglasses all week,” says Andy Wallace, a Birmingham native who works at UAB – The University of Alabama at Birmingham. “I was playing ball with some of the kids and got hit in the face, and my glasses broke. The rest of the week was spent with a pair of cracked and taped spectacles.”

Wallace explains that it was that moment when he decided it was time for his lifelong journey with glasses and contacts to come to an end. As an active guy who enjoys the outdoors, his poor vision was really slowing him down.

“Several years ago when I first read about LASIK, I got really excited about it, but my ophthalmologist at the time somehow convinced me that it wasn’t the right choice for me,” he explains. Years later, his interest in LASIK peaked again, but this time he turned to Dr. Marc Michelson at Michelson Laser Vision, Inc., who assured Wallace that he was a perfect candidate for surgery.

Now, whether Wallace is planning an event for UAB alumni or hanging out at home with his spouse, Martin, and their three pets, he is no longer limited by his vision.
