One on One: Dave Barnhart and Chelsea Berler

The sometimes disparate worlds of public relations/marketing and religion come together in our One on One conversation this month.

Dave Barnhart is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church. He earned his Master of Divinity from Candler School of Theology in 1997, and his Ph.D from Vanderbilt University in 2004. He and his wife, Angela, live with their son, Leo, in Birmingham. Dave is the author of two books, What’s in the Bible About Church? (2008) and God Shows No Partiality (2012).

The notion of partiality, or lack thereof, plays a unique role in the life of Barnhart’s United Methodist church, St. Junia, which meets in the Crestwood section of the city on Sunday afternoons. “The vision of Saint Junia is to become a diverse community of sinners, saints, and skeptics who join God in the renewal of all things,” Barnhart says. “Since all people are made in the image of God, our desire is to become a community in which black, white, and Latino, gay and straight, old and young, rich and poor, male and female are welcome to the table and invited to use their diverse gifts for worship and ministry. We want to be a witness to Birmingham and to the world that the Good News is for all people.

“Martin Luther said that we are simultaneously sinners and saints, and it has been said that every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future,” Barnhart says.

Chelsea Berler is founder and CEO of Solamar Agency, which provides creative solutions for business owners who want marketing and administrative help without the overhead of an in-house staff.

Over the last seven years, Berler has built a business with a passionate team of marketing consultants, account managers, technical developers, and design specialists who service and support clients.

Starting out as a completely virtual company, Solamar grew rapidly over the next few years and today has more than 20 design, marketing, copywriting, tech, and administrative professionals from all over the United States ready to work on projects.

“Every client is different and we never want anyone to ‘fit inside a box’ so we meet them where they need to be met. We want to create whatever they need to get the outcome they want. It’s important to know that in every facet of your business, we will be there. From admin to very high level design and strategy—we want to be your everything. We are your home for great work,” she says.

“We’ve worked with manufacturing companies, coaches and consultants, wedding event planners, logistics companies, therapists, photographers, franchises, schools, real-estate agents, non-profits, title companies, and many other businesses that are looking for a full-service, high-touch marketing agency.”
