Few things are as Southern as an ice-cold Grapico. For many people, this classic soda may well be the one and only “purple drank.” As an ode to this old-school refreshment, we’ve created recipes that show that apart from being a carbonated classic, Grapico can add a sparkle your sweets.

Here are three distinct ways to enjoy: frozen, with a Grown-Up Slushie; baked, with the Grape Soda Cake; and chilled, with Grape Soda Truffles. Dare to believe that bubbly beverages aren’t just for kids, and get your Grapico on again.

Purple 1

Grape Soda Cake

Serves 15

Cake:

3 cups all-purpose flour

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon baking powder

1 ½ cups butter, softened

3 cups granulated sugar

5 eggs

1 cup grape soda

1 tablespoon lime zest

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Icing:

½ cup butter, melted

6 tablespoons grape soda

1 (1 lb) box powdered sugar

1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

Round sugar sprinkles, for garnish

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9 x 13-inch baking pan. Combine flour, salt, and baking powder in a medium bowl. Beat butter and granulated sugar with a mixer at medium speed until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, until combined. Gradually beat in flour mixture alternating with grape soda. Beat in lime zest and vanilla until just combined. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake 50–60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely on a wire rack, about two hours.

To make icing, combine melted butter and grape soda in a medium bowl, whisking until smooth. Gradually whisk in powdered sugar and lime juice. Pour over cake. Top with sprinkles, if desired.

Purple 2Grape Soda Truffles

Makes about 32 truffles

Truffles:

1 (11-oz) box vanilla wafers, crushed (3 cups crumbs)

2 cups powdered sugar

1 cup slivered almonds, finely chopped

½ cup grape soda

2 tablespoons butter, melted

Icing:

2 cups powdered sugar

¼ cup butter, melted

1/3 cup grape soda

1 tablespoon lemon juice

Stir together vanilla wafer crumbs and next four ingredients. Shape mixture into 1 ¼-inch balls. Cover and chill 30 minutes. To make frosting, whisk together powdered sugar, melted butter, grape soda, and lemon juice until smooth, adding additional powdered sugar as necessary to achieve desired consistency. Dip chilled balls into frosting; chill until ready to serve. Top with sprinkles before serving.

Purple 3Grown-Up Grape Slushie

Makes 4 drinks

3 cups grape soda, chilled (24 oz.)

6 ounces frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed

6 ounces vodka, chilled

Combine soda, lemonade concentrate, and vodka in a large freezer-safe container. Cover and freeze 8 hours or overnight. Spoon into chilled glasses and serve immediately.
