School is back in session! With the start of a new academic year comes the supply lists for notebooks, calculators, and No. 2 pencils. These are the requirements for a successful student, but the real goal is a fresh back-to-school look. While every adolescent is discovering his or her own unique style, I encourage budding fashionistas to take a step away from the standards of mall shopping. American Eagle, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Gap have been done. To make your mark in the hallways this year, look to tailored, but affordable styles offered by stores such as H&M, Zara, Topshop, and even Target. You don’t need the most expensive wardrobe to make the biggest statement; with a growing body you shouldn’t be expecting to get high-dollar denim that may not fit by the time the school year ends. The best advice I can give is that a true original doesn’t need what everyone else already has but wears what everyone else is going to want next. Take a risk, as long as it adheres to the dress code. With that said, let’s take a look at five pieces that will amp up your first day fashion.
Classic American denim begins and ends with a great pair of Levi’s. They pair with anything for a ready-to-go look that won’t break the bank. With a wide array of fits and washes, you can find exactly what looks best on you. The key is to make sure they fit you well—baggy is bad. A denim jacket always looks great, too, with just a neutral v-neck shirt and unzipped hoodie. Layers are always a good idea!
Tartan prints not only made a big splash on Fall/Winter 2015 runways, but are also a great throwback look to classic school uniforms. Rethink this pattern with a fashion twist. Your homework is to watch Clueless if you never have. Cher and Dionne will never lead you astray!
I feel like I’m on a personal mission to rid the world of everyday flip-flops for all ages, so the earlier we start the better. Your weekdays spent poolside are over, so find a great canvas sneaker, loafer, or ankle boot that will be versatile for any outfit. Shoes are the foundation of every great look, so make sure you don’t skip this step during your shopping.
Accessories can make or break an outfit. Think about an item or special piece that can represent you, whether it be a fun piece of jewelry, a collection of scarves, or perhaps a pair of suspenders. Think along the lines of a certain shape, color, or style to create a signature look you can call your own.
A Fresh Haircut
Absolutely nothing makes an impression after a summer away from school like a new hairstyle. Scour magazines for different cuts and color treatments, and then speak with your stylist or barber about what will work best for your particular face shape. A fresh cut that gives you confidence will transform you instantly and certainly will turn heads on your way to homeroom.
