The 40th Annual Greek Food Festival
Holy Trinity Greek Cathedral  9/27-9/29

OPA! It’s that time of year again, so come hungry to one of Birmingham’s most highly anticipated events. A true cultural experience, this festival is an act of love from Birmingham’s Greek community and more than 100 parish volunteers. In addition to delicious authentic Greek cuisine, you’ll enjoy live Greek music, Greek dancing by the youth, and a warm, spirited atmosphere that embraces everyone as family. As thousands of returning patrons can attest, you will leave a devoted fan of both the culture and the cuisine! Birmingham is home to the seventh oldest Greek Orthodox parish in the United States and the Holy Trinity Greek Cathedral architecture is breathtaking so don’t miss the chance to take a guided tour. Drive-Thru and walk-up lines are open 10:30a.m. until 7:00 p.m., Thursday through Saturday to make “gettin’ your Greek on” deliciously easy! More details here

The rest of the world has already acknowledged that this man may very well be the 2nd coming of a punk rock Springsteen. For three long and often lonely years of life on the road, plying a brand of honest and passionate folk/punk, Frank Turner continues to rise to prominence with an ever increasing following. Frank’s last headline gig in Birmingham was at Cave 9. He has since headlined at Wembley Arena in April to a sold-out crowd of 12,000 and recently played the opening ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics. And now he’s spending his off day in Birmingham (America) and on stage at the new Black Market Bar on Highland Avenue. The Chad Fisher Group

Lyric Theatre, 9/28, 7:00 PM

Come be part of a one-night-only event at The Lyric Theatre! The Chad Fisher Group, a jazz project combining pure improvisation with original compositions and arrangements guaranteed to move the feet as well as the soul, will take the stage for an acoustic show. It’s the first concert to ring the rafters of Birmingham’s landmark vaudeville showplace in the 21st century! Bring your own lawn chair and blankets to experience the great acoustic sounds of the historic Lyric Theatre. Beverages including beer and wine will be sold at the event. Cirque Alys Aerial Music
Alys Stephens Center, 9/28, 8:00 PM

Cirque Alys Aerial Music, a one-time-only event Friday, Sept. 28, will begin inside the Alys Stephens Center’s Jemison Concert Hall with a performance featuring the audience seated underneath the giant Earth Harp, out-of-this-world floating percussion machines and dream-like, athletic cirque performers suspended in the air from silken ropes. The audience then will move to the center’s outdoor Engel Plaza for the grand finale, performed on an open-air, 25-foot-high truss sculpture that becomes both the instrument and the structure for a beautiful aerial performance. After the performance, the audience is invited to stay for a special after-party featuring MASS Ensemble‘s resident DJ, a cash bar, gourmet food and Dreamcakes for sale. Western’s Wine and Food Festival:
Benefiting Emmet O’Neal Library

Birmingham Zoo, 9/28, 6:00 – 9:00 PM

Mark your calendar for Western’s Wine & Food Festival benefiting Emmet O’Neal Library on Friday, September 28 from 6:00-9:00 at the Birmingham Zoo. Featuring numerous wine vendors offering over 650 wines for tasting, guests are treated to delicious foods with a focus on Alabama products prepared by the chefs from Jefferson State Culinary School.  Carousel rides and touring animals add to the evening’s excitement. Tickets are $45 in advance, $55 at the door…opening the door to a full evening of wine and wonderful food in the wild setting of the Birmingham Zoo!  More details here

Smithsonian’s ‘Museum Day Live!’ at the
Iron & Steel Museum of Alabama

Hot Strings Fest 2012: Music and Arts Festival
The Preserve, 9/30, 12:00 – 6:00 PM
The Foundry’s annual fundraiser, Hot Strings, is in its third year, bigger and better than ever! On September 30th Hot Strings is back at The Preserve with an all-star lineup of some of the finest bluegrass music in the country. Hot Strings headliner is Sierra Hull, noted mandolin player, singer and songwriter with Allison Krauss for ten years. The Newgrass Troubadours, Shannon and Heather Slaughter & County Clare, and Alabama favorite, Three on a String, will also burn up the stage at Hot Strings 2012! This family-friendly festival is an outdoor, alcohol-free event with food, an art showcase, fiddlin’ contest and kids activity area. Folks are encouraged to bring their blankets and lawn chairs. And since The Preserve is a pet friendly venue, furry friends are welcome, too!

Swing Night at the Southern Museum of Flight

Support the south’s future in flight at Flight Swing Night!  Enjoy a night of swing dancing and participate in a silent auction on Thursday, October 4 from 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm. Enjoy live music by Ain’t Misbehavin’, an 18-piece orchestra and take a beginner East Coast Swing lesson from 6:30 – 7:00 pm taught by Pat Abbott-Cobb and Dan Cobb of the Birmingham Swing Dancers. Free snacks and beverages will be provided. Swing Night is a fundraiser for the Southern Museum of Flight which provides educational tours and programs to over 20 districts locally and serves numerous national tours and programs for people of all ages. REMEMBRANCE: Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Alabama’s
‘Day of the Dead’ Festival

Getting in the spirit of the season, Art Folk Gallery will host an group exhibition celebrating Alabama’s 10th Day of the Dead Festival The exhibit will feature works by local artists inspired by Day of the Dead in honor of the festival’s tenth anniversary. There will also be a wall of skull masks decorated by local artists and volunteers which will be for “competitive sale” – similar to auction. Birmingham’s driving force behind the annual ‘Day of the Dead’ celebration, Wendy Jarvis , is the guest curator for this exhibit and a percentage of all sales will go to support Art Folk Gallery and the Festival. Oktoberfest at Avondale Brewing

Jump into your ‘lederhosen’  and run over to Oktoberfest at Avondale Brewing for a night of beer, brats, and live music on October 4th!
