In the end, perhaps more than even preparing the seafood he has made his life’s work, it is the people that matter to George Sarris. “From the first day we opened we made the place welcome, no matter who you are,” says Fish Market owner and Birmingham restaurant icon George Sarris. “I was helped by so many people in Birmingham. I never felt unwelcome, not once, ever since I arrived here on April 1, 1969.”
His iconic restaurant, The Fish Market on Southside, embodies this Greek sense of hospitality, food and friendship.
That welcoming sensibility extends to the family that has been central to Sarris’ business life. His son, Dino, works side by side with George in their Southside restaurant every day, extending the legendary restaurant’s reputation for quality, friendliness and wonderful food into the next generation.
