Craft beer in Birmingham is seeing a renaissance, reawakening a tradition that had long been dormant. A variety of local breweries offer unique and artisan brews. This trend includes a focus on local ingredients, experimental brews, and community-centric brewery experiences. The rise of craft beer has also influenced local food pairings, with breweries often collaborating with restaurants to create exclusive beer and food experiences. Believe it or not craft beer brewing and selling in Birmingham didn’t become legal until 2009. This pivotal change in laws marked the beginning of a new era for craft beer in Birmingham.

The first brewery to make its mark in Birmingham’s renewed craft beer landscape was Good People Brewing, founded in 2008 and opened its doors in 2010. This establishment set the stage for a burgeoning local craft beer scene that would eventually include a diverse array of breweries.

Michael Sellers and Jason Malone founded Good People Brewing Company in Birmingham in 2008. The two began home-brewing in the early 2000s before Alabama legalized it in 2008, which is why the brewery’s slogan is “Legally Brewed Since 2008”. On July 4, 2008, they tapped their first keg of Good People Brown Ale. Today, Good People Brewing Company is Alabama’s largest and oldest brewery, and its beer is available in restaurants, bars, and groceries throughout Birmingham, as well as in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida. The brewery features an outdoor area, beer on tap, frozen seasonal specials, kombucha, and food truck pop ups Wednesday-Sunday. Bring friends and try the Funk Farms sour beers aged in wine and bourbon barrels.

Good People Brewery quickly gained a reputation for its exceptional beers and community focused approach. Their flagship beers, such as the Pale Ale and Brown Ale, became staples in local bars and restaurants, earning them a loyal following. The brewery’s success also inspired a new generation of brewers and beer enthusiasts in the region.

The culture of brewing beer in Birmingham has evolved significantly since Good People’s inception. The city’s beer scene now reflects a blend of innovation and tradition, with breweries embracing a wide range of styles and brewing techniques.

Good People Brewery has played a crucial role in shaping this culture, fostering a sense of camaraderie and creativity among local brewers and consumers alike. Good People has branched off to offerings of sour beers in wine bottles, spirits, signature cocktails and planted in various locations across the Southeast.
