John “Buzz” Busby doesn’t just work to live, but he lives to serve others. As plant maintenance manager of AMERICAN Cast Iron Pipe Company, his passionate and giving spirit enhances the lives of those around him. He is an AMERICAN employee of 45 years and serves on the company’s board of directors as an employee-elected representative. A champion of the manufacturing trades and vocational education, John helps recruit and mentor new employees in the apprenticeship program, ensuring they know there’s opportunity and a pathway for growth at AMERICAN. He serves on the advisory board for Alabama FAME (Foundation for Advanced Manufacturing Education) and is helping AMERICAN develop its own unique industrial internship program. John also puts his mechanical construction and leadership talents to work on the Christian mission field. He dedicates personal and vacation time to volunteer for projects in local communities, church building throughout the U.S. with Builders for Christ, Bible camp construction in Alaska through Echo Ranch/AVANT Ministries and home building in Costa Rica. John and his wife Mary are volunteers for Neverthirst, a Birmingham-based ministry joining like-minded people in area churches to bring clean and living water to unreached communities worldwide. John and Mary raised three children and have seven grandchildren ranging in age from 1 to 15 years. They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on July 8. John lives by this guideline: “Memories can fade, but legacies live on, if we serve.”
