The Face of Entertaining and Inspiring Audiences
For over a century, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra (ASO) has been an essential part of Alabama’s cultural heartbeat. What began in 1921 as a group of passionate volunteer musicians has since evolved into the state’s only full-time professional orchestra—a dynamic ensemble known for its artistry, innovation, and dedication to community enrichment.
At the helm of the ASO since 2015 is Maestro Carlos Izcaray, a conductor celebrated on five continents for his spirited interpretations and musical sensitivity. Izcaray also served as Music Director of the American Youth Symphony (2016–2024), and continues to inspire both musicians and audiences alike. Under his leadership, the ASO explores a wide range of repertoire—from timeless masterworks to bold contemporary compositions—delivering performances that challenge, delight, and uplift.
Beyond the concert hall, the ASO plays a vital role in education across Alabama. Its award-winning programs introduce thousands of students each year to the power and beauty of orchestral music. For many, these performances mark their very first encounter with a live symphony—and often, the beginning of a lifelong love for music.
With a mission rooted in excellence, education, and artistic exploration, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra continues to shape the cultural landscape of the South—one unforgettable note at a time.
